The Secure Digital Music Initiative consortium has issued a public challenge
to crack the code of a few of their proposed watermarking technologies.
They offer a few different packages that represent a proposed watermarking
technology. In each package, there are 3 audio samples. The first is not
watermarked. The second is watermarked. The third is a different audio
sample which is watermarked with the same technology as the second. They
are offering $10,000 to anyone that can return the third sample with the
"watermark" removed without significantly degrading the audio quality. Here
is my favorite quote from the rules of entry page...
"You may, of course, elect not to receive compensation, in which event you
will not be required to sign a separate document or assign any of your
intellectual property rights, although you are still encouraged to submit
details of your attack."
The files are huge, (~50M) so you'll need a fast connection. Very
interesting stuff I thought.
