Quick report / comments for those of you who didn't or couldn't go. Boards of Canada were cool - Loads of good stuff I didn't recognise. Ummm, I can't say anything else really wonderful aside from that. Personal opinion - Autechre sucked. A lot. As a matter of fact, it was largely disappointing. For one thing, no little notices telling me when who was playing. People kept walking up and asking me if I knew who was on etc etc. Took educated guesses a lot of the time, but considering there were supposed to be a few acts who don't even have records out on the label yet, it didn't help. And considering I went to all 3 of the 10'th birthday parties last year, I'm perfectly aware Warp know how to do it properly. -i. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It was a huge event and from what I saw, made a _lot_ of people very happy. I guess there are pros and cons to organising something as big as this. My biggest disappointment was that the windows didn't explode spectacularly, like they were threatening to do all night. From outside, the noise made by all that glass rattling in the window frames from both buildings was an experience in itself. -- A member of the state51 conspiracy alex@(state51.co.uk|lurk.org|generative.net|(vx)?slab.org) This is a one time e-mail transmission. I thought BoC were basically pretty dull. It may just have been that I was up for dancing and their stuff was a bit sedate, but it certainly didn't grab me or hold my attention.

Other difficulties were the long queues to get in, the ridiculous drinks prices (oh, and no tap water available), the fact that they ran out of beer at about midnight anyway, and... great night, though :-)

I'm pretty sure they weren't ae, as they played in the other room later (then again, I don't know what ae look like, so I could be wrong).

Well, the Warp Lighthouse Party last night was absolutely ridiculous. There's just something amazing about seeing a few thousand people pack a venue to see music like this. According to the paper here, the party sold out the first day in London, so I wonder how big it would've gotten if they hadn't been limited by the venue. The venue was absolutely awesome. It was in the docklands area of London, which is a really awesome area. Apparenlty it was growing really quickly during the economic boom of the late 80's but then when the recession set in, there were just a ton of brand new buildings left empty. Now that the economy is picking up again, stuff is actually starting to move there (i.e. the Millenium Dome) and they are putting in more public transportation methods (like the Docklands Light Rail) to promote commerce. The venue was actually two buildings (neither of which were a lighthouse, though it was right next to the Trinity Buoy Wharf lighthouse) which were situated right along the water. A very cool venue, if you ask me. The soundsystems were both very good, although the one in the main room was annoying at times because of how the room was set up; it was basically a big room with partitions in the middle that each came in about 1/3rd of the way, meaning there was only a small opening, which restricted access and cut a lot of the sound (even though they separate, albeit smaller stacks, in the other half). The Skam room was pretty good, though I didn't see anything that terribly exciting in it. There were a lot more DJs in there than I expected (which was true for both rooms). The sound was very good and they had fairly cool visuals on the projector screens too. The Warp room really didn't keep me that interested for the first portion either. I was just kind of wandering around between the two listening to a lot of music that I wasn't really that into. Don't get me wrong, were this a normal rave I would've freaked out if I would've heard this stuff, but in light of the lineup, a lot of the bands just weren't really up to par. Boards of Canada played a damn good set in the main room but it was so packed in there that it made it not nearly as enjoyable as it could have been. Autechre played a bit later and they were pretty good, though they played a little more Gescom-ish than Autechre-ish, or maybe I'm just smoking crack. It was more DSP-based and not that melodic, but still enjoyable. Around this time, it started getting a little less packed, which was nice. Then Bogdan went on. Now, I like Bogdan's music a lot and I've seen him live before and he was good... But this set was absolutely fucking amazing. He played, by far, the best set of the night. He played pretty hard (especially in relation to everybody before him) and it was amazing. He got an excellent crowd reaction (tons of people screaming and dancing) and really played well to the crowd. He was jumping all over the stage and screaming and it was fucking ridiculous. Amazing. Four people from the crowd jumped up on the stage and danced and nobody cared, it was great. Craziness is always a good thing, especially after a long night of wankful chin-stroking. I really think the crowd was waiting for something they could dance to after a very laid back evening. After Bogdan got done, Chris Cunningham went on and played an OK set. NO THIS WASN'T APHEX FUCKING TWIN. Everybody thought it was and everybody kept telling me it was, but I was standing right up front and I watched Aphex Twin stand in front of his turntables and laptop with no records spinning, just waiting for his turn. Richard did do a bit of laptop stuff to apply effects and play some tracks of his into the set, but he wasn't playing yet. Chris played harder stuff and I really liked it. Some really good jungle tracks and such- just the kind of stuff I'm into. Very nice. When Chris was finally done (about 5:50), Richard finally started playing. He only got through one mix before the cops/security/guysinuglycoats started making the motions for him to turn off the music. He tried ignoring them, but finally they just came over and shut off his turntables. Overall, it was a fucking excellent night though. I'd like to hope that, based on Bogdan, Chris and Richard's sets, maybe Rephlex will start to move into the "harder" stuff because that would be excellent. Anyway, hi to everybody that I talked to (xdrquinnx & crew, marumari, guy on Virgin, etc). That's all. -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@curiousnetworks.com http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm afraid I have to agree with a lot of this. The sound systems were awesome: really tight, not too much bass (some engineers get carried away), but then you'd expect Warp to have a good PA. The visuals in the Skam building were cool...to start with, but they stayed the same for the whole time. The main building was disappointing, especially for the strange walls right in the middle, which got in everyone's way What really pissed me off was the fact that I couldn't find a schedule for the show anywhere. And from the people I spoke to, nobody had any idea when particular artists were gonna be on. This was frustrating as by the time I heard that Autechre were on, I'd missed most of the set. But they weren't that great anyway. Someone in the main building played some pretty intense tweaked drum'n'bass tunes - a la Squarepusher - the remix of Amazon II "Big Booyaa". Nice, but the original was better. Was that Bogdan who played that? I think it was around 3am, and he was wearing a blue t-shirt with some black symbol in the middle. He was jumping around like a lunatic. During that set, I went outside and saw Richard James, and had a little chat with him about Impulse Tracker, of all things. Nice guy, but it was kinda surreal talking to him. The only time I've seen his face before was on small schoolgirls, and fine women in string bikinis. Very odd experience seeing him in the flesh. But yeah, very nice guy. Anyway...I asked him when he was playing, and he told me he'd already played. Which appears to be a total lie. We'd left by 5.45 out of boredom, and extreme cold. Overall, it was an interesting night, but not something I would do again. G-love. http://www.gram.org.uk --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Didn't Ritchie Devine and Prefuse 73 play at this thing ? Nobody's commented on their sets yet. Devine's mini-album coming out on Warp is pretty incredible. Some next level shit, as they say. I'd say it's the most forward thinking and daring IDM record I've heard since Ae's "EP7". It's actually more like some sort of electro-acoustic album than IDM. Probably not one for the "Amber is the ideal IDM / EP7 is a bunch of DSP wankery" set. Yeah it was very packed. Too packed for me - I bailed after a few tracks into the other room. I thought BoC were cool - pretty minimal and the drums sounded a bit too heavy so you missed the textures but some great tracks (two off the new EP). No-ones mentioned Plaid - they were the highlight IMO. Lots of varied tracks, most of them new. The track with the people shouting in it was strange and delightful. Unfortunate crash near the end.

It was pretty mental. First track was amazing - lots of experimentation but because there was a regular beat, it had a good structure from which to build. The following tracks were all over the place. Mad sounds but trickier to follow. Bizarrely, the set sounded better over by the toilet block.

The Skam room was playing some hard shit - some good, some bad. I was hearing lots of DSP'd beats but really simple drony basses and other sounds. It would've been nice to hear attention on areas other than the kick drum - that was probably the rig though, had some meaty bass on it. || [CiM] || cim@headspacerecordings.co.uk || cim@defocusrecords.co.uk _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. All the schedules were pushed back due to the delays in getting people into the venue. There might have been some slot-swapping as well. Ie. even if they'd printed schedules, they would've been incorrect. || [CiM] || cim@headspacerecordings.co.uk || cim@defocusrecords.co.uk _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
