Cichlisuite was the EP which came before the release of LP5. It's really
tight I highly recommend it. In my mind it was one of the first examples
of that trademark Ae technique of super fast and offkey (for lack of a
better word) arpeggio thingys. Similar techniques can be heard on LP5 and
EP7. And that really chill track with the somber melodies, like the 3rd or
4th track (sorry again for the vague descriptions, I know 'somber' can
describe just about half the crap out there) is so beautiful.
In terms of votes I too think Amber is numero uno. It's all good but
Amber just stirkes a particular chord me and I guess many here.
I think also that if you bought these records as they came out as opposed
to later in order to complete the collection they will mean different
things. I suspect those who rate amber highest bought it when it came out
and may have mixed feelings as Ae seemed to get crunchier and more
mechanical sounding.
Finally, I think EP7 is the weakest of the bunch. I know a lot of people
dig it, and I dig parts of it (the sound design is amazing), but as a
whole most of the tracks never go anywhere. They seem like cutting room
floor jobbies from Cichli and LP5. Autechre has occasionally taken
criticism for their penchant for monotony, and IMHO EP7 is the worst
offender. It's funny because the Anvil Vapre EP also has a high amount of
this repition/monotony, and yet I really really like that record for some
reason, maybe its the unrelenting drums...
