Hadn't seen anyone comment on it yet (although maybe that's because it was
just released yesterday), so:
If you hadn't heard the hook for Rewind (or Hexstatic for that matter) it's
that every single song created by them, is modelled out of video clips.
Their work with Coldcut on Timber and Natural Rhythms was fantastic (and
available on the Timber and Atomic Moog 2000 CD Singles as quicktime
videos). Rewind is an album of funky electro breaks with crazy samples
galore. I would hesistate to compare Hex to any single artist, as much of
their stuff is an amalgam of other genres, although Coldcut would be the
obvious choice to draw relations with. Stand out audio tracks include
Communication Breakdown, Deadly Media, Machine Toy and Kids Can Dance. Stand
out videos include Machine Toy, Ninja Tune, Auto, and Deadly Media (!!!).
The downside to the album is that, as with most albums, there is very little
diversity in styles of the tracks, and as much fun as electro breaks are for
4 tracks, at 12 they wear me down. The audio mix of Ninja Tune leaves a
little to be desired, and sounds like a track I will skip on relistens,
although the video is pimp. Also, at 42 minutes, this is one svelt release.
Which leads me to my question: What the hell took so long? I saw Hex a bit
more than a year ago, and I remember seeing probably 8 out of the 12 videos,
and none of the new vids (with the exception of Auto) really knock my socks
off. Also why isn't Hex touring _now_ that the album is out? Get 'em out
there with 3 huge screens and Chris Cunningham vids during the set changes
again. Having Hex open for Coldcut would be fantastic.
Anyhow, as far as the remix things go, they're decent, but if Ninjas are
listening the Amon Tobin remix thing on his microsite is the best designed
interface. Give a good keyboard interface to all the remix things and
they'll be great.
Overall Rating: 8/10
Cheers
