I'd have to look it up in various books at home, but I'm sure it's got something to do with the Haas zone. I might be mistaken, but I think it states that anything closer than 40 to 50 milliseconds apart we'll hear as one sound. As you increase the time between sounds, the second will appear to be a reverb/delay of the first and will eventually, with increased time seperating the two, sound as its own distinct sound. I've no idea what that would figure in terms of bpm.
