IDM = Intelligent Discussion of Music? hrm...could be catchy...kinda like our own little club, albeit a superior little club. ---brian btw, I've got this Swayzak disk and, whatever it is, I like it. And actually, I DO like the kirsty hawkshaw track...nice to hear her voice again. ------------------------ Brian W. In conclusion, I would like to put forward the idea that this list should not be limited to the discussion of "IDM"(whatver that is) but extend to a sort-of "reasoned discussion of dance music". (or in a catchier to but more annoying phrase "intelligent discussion of dance music".) I haven't seen this kind of use of the list so I'm somewhat hesitant to advance the idea, but everyone seems to agree that the definiton of IDM is "music discussed on the iDM list serv"... ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tech house, TO ME, is basically housy sounding techno or techno sounding house. Go figure. Lots of people consider slower less agressive jazzy techno to be techhouse too. It can be funky or cold, jazzy or mechanical. It usually hovers in the high 120s.

Not in washington DC :)

I'll get flak for this, but I would say Soma is the defining label, even though I have a feeling they were out of the loop for the tech house emergence. But what do I know, I only buy 20 or so records a month. Check out the m_nus thx releases too.

tech house has always been around. Someone decided to label the sound at some point. Since the 80s I think there have been points at which house crossed into techno areas and visa versa. I'd say a lot of Detroit techno could be considered tech house (not politically tho') because the funk was always there. And it's funny - I borrowed this CD from a friend by Terry Francis called Architecture - He said it was the defining tech house CD, but uh, I totally don't see it. It seemed like a bunch of overproduced house tracks to my ears. bleh. -Gil np: Stevie Be Zet - Archaic Modulation (old i know :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
