i have no problem with using loops to create music. the objection many people have with loop-based music is that much of the time the producer just grabs a loop from a CD or LP of pre-recorded material and drops it into a window, repeats the processs and really doesn't add much of their own style to the music. it doesn't have to be that way ... it's completely possible to record your own instrumental loops and use them with a program like this. in my eyes, the technique used to create the music is inconsequential so long as the finished song is unique and enjoyable to the discerning listener. -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Mon, 14 Aug 2000, [iso-8859-1] Ben Hatchelt wrote:

The opinions of the listeners are inconsequential to the discerning music maker; although I can't help being a little sensitive sometimes. Anyone who has any problem whatsoever with using ANYTHING to make music (loops, wazoos, scratched CDs, dirty tampons, etc.) should not be listening to or making it, for they do not have the ability to experience it with an open mind or in the relative context it fits into. Just thought I'd like to say fruity loops is badass. The process of music making IS inconsequential just as is the appreciation of any kind of music is. Anyway, FLP is a sweeeeet tracker with great options, good midi implementation, and I'm sure the FX stuff works great too. My point of view is, music is a collection of samples for the most part, or can be viewed as one, and any way to sequence or arrange samples, no less manipulate them, is a good expedient. Whatever works works. Id also like to put in a quote by one of the autechre guys, but I couldnt find it. It went something like "you have to push the limits of whatever youre using to obtain a good end"... I truely agree with that, cause anyone can put a few cool sounds together. Autechre, moreover, is an excellent example of how artists pushed their machines and brains past their preconceived limits.... blahlblhala ian -----Original Message----- From: kevy [mailto:kevykev@ixpres.com] Sent: Monday, August 14, 2000 12:29 PM To: Josh Davison; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] Re: Fruity-Loops Kevy wrote: Uh, I don't think so.
