Anyone ever use a boss dr660 drum machine? I am in the process of setting up a home studio, I have rebirth and am thinking about getting this machine used, is it a waste of money or something that would be a valued asset in a idm geared set up? thanks for any input -scott --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the problem with roland drum machines and "drum machines" in general is that the sounds in them are preset and not very customizable. if you want to sound like autechre or something you'll probably be disappointed ... you'll definitely want some sort of effects to make it sound a bit more interesting. they sound good when run through some distortion or a filter that doesn't mean it's worthless though ... i still use my old R70 (which is arguably much more lame-sounding than a DR660) for sampling sources and easy quick sequences for sketching etc. if it's used and going for a cheap price, there's no reason why you shouldn't pick it up, esp. if you're on a low budget. at any rate it's probably a bit more flexible than ReBirth esp. in terms of sequencing control. plus the roland drum machines have good midi brains and can be hacked relatively easily to drive other MIDI modules ... all of Squarepusher's old stuff was sequenced entirely on a DR660 ... which is a testament to his dedication and talent if anything is :) josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Fri, 11 Aug 2000, Scott Allison wrote:

just my opinion...re-birth is cool for techno, but for IDM i'm not sure...maybe for some of the sounds, but the grid sequencer (808, 909)is more geared for 4/4 type stuff...i could be wrong though...also if you already have a computer why not use cubase or cakewalk to sequence? the potential for more intricate rythmn programming is far greater than with a drum machine. just my .02 greg

use one all the time. easy to program. four outs, CR78, 808 and 909 kits that can all be made unrecognizable in no time. we've three in the studio all said and done. you can do some cool realtime things live as well. best of all they are very small and light. I wouldn't pay too much for one. might not have all that you are looking for if you want to do filter sweeps, etc. but it's good if you want a simple yet rounded drum kit -dg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

autechre uses a tr606.... so does aphex twin... the most simplest form of preset drums... it doesnt matter if sounds are preset you need to be creative with the pattern of the drums and the filtering of the sounds... welcome to electronica.

The 660 is a good choice if you are looking for a good set of standard drum sounds (as well as some unique samples). It has a full 808 and a partial 909 kit, and many good acoustic snares, toms, kicks, etc. It also has 2 individual outputs in addition to stereo outs. The FX however are absolutely terrible, and it's not terribly tweakable. You can do rudimentary tuning/panning/decay tweaking, but it's all still sample-based. I've owned two at different times, but ended up tiring of their sounds in each case. If you're looking for something a bit electronic and less typical drum sounds, consider the Korg ER-1. Squarepusher's stuff being sequenced _all_ on a dr-660 is pretty bollocks. You can't get those cut-up drum sounds squarepusher is famous for. (spymania era) Maybe sampled 660.
