Yeah, I love Romanthony too -- he doesn't seem to get nearly enough
attention in America as he should, though maybe it's different in garage
circles... I haven't heard the new one on GU, but I've got "Live in the
Mix" on Distance from last year, and it's a really fun acid/garage
soundclash, reminds me of early New York house or really hard Chicago
jacking tracks. Most or all of the productions are his too, though a few
are diva tracks (not that I mind a great diva track; Masters at Work's "To
Be in Love" is still one of my favorite dance tracks of all time).
Is "Bring U Up" on the new GU album? That *is* a stellar track (it's also
on Glasgow Underground 3).
Here's a review of Live in the Mix I wrote for All Music Guide:
An irresistible ride through hard house that brings back the spirit of
pummeling DJ sessions on New York's Kiss-FM, Live in the Mix is a
hard-hitting compilation of tracks from the three major labels helmed by
Romanthony (Orange, World, Black Male), including five numbers from the man
himself. Romanthony obviously knows these tracks well, from female-vocal
productions for Nyree ("Dance With Me," "Good Times," "I Like It") to
hip-house breakdowns from MC Gift ("Beatrock") to his own tracks. It's on
his own tracks, particularly the back-to-back anthems "Floorpiece" and
"Under/Main" where Live in the Mix peaks. Proof positive why he's Daft
Punk's favorite DJ. John Bush
