I picked up something by him a few yrs back on Glasgow Underground. It's kinda vocally Housy Soulful fare. Slow tho' right around 120 bpm. One rmx stands out that has like 2 or 3 layered Kicks and eq'd way crazy that it would rock any club. -Gil might be called "the way that u love me" On Thu, 10 Aug 2000, Kelley Hackett wrote:

I was just listening to Romanthony last night!!! He's like the Prince (as in *Prince*) of house music, with Prince style song titles (Bring U Up, Down 4 U, my two favorite tracks) and staccato vocals. Very funky house with some timbaland style syncopation and a wide variety of instrumental styles. Lot's of that spaerse Prince style guitars and bass, but with house kicks. He's a bit of an R&B mack sometimes ("I wanna do your body babe" vocals, not what sterile conservative IDM fans are usually into), but it's all part of his New Jersey vibe. Really innovative stuff - at his best he's one of my current faves. Get the Glasgow Underground album - its a compilation of a bunch of tracks he's done over the years, it's called "R.Hide in Plain Site". I have another CD by him but it's not as good - he's occasionally prone to some spotty production and cheesy lyrics here and there. - Cf --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, I love Romanthony too -- he doesn't seem to get nearly enough attention in America as he should, though maybe it's different in garage circles... I haven't heard the new one on GU, but I've got "Live in the Mix" on Distance from last year, and it's a really fun acid/garage soundclash, reminds me of early New York house or really hard Chicago jacking tracks. Most or all of the productions are his too, though a few are diva tracks (not that I mind a great diva track; Masters at Work's "To Be in Love" is still one of my favorite dance tracks of all time). Is "Bring U Up" on the new GU album? That *is* a stellar track (it's also on Glasgow Underground 3). Here's a review of Live in the Mix I wrote for All Music Guide: An irresistible ride through hard house that brings back the spirit of pummeling DJ sessions on New York's Kiss-FM, Live in the Mix is a hard-hitting compilation of tracks from the three major labels helmed by Romanthony (Orange, World, Black Male), including five numbers from the man himself. Romanthony obviously knows these tracks well, from female-vocal productions for Nyree ("Dance With Me," "Good Times," "I Like It") to hip-house breakdowns from MC Gift ("Beatrock") to his own tracks. It's on his own tracks, particularly the back-to-back anthems "Floorpiece" and "Under/Main" where Live in the Mix peaks. Proof positive why he's Daft Punk's favorite DJ. — John Bush .John. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
