Enough of this non-objective back-and-forthing on gay and straight. Conjectures and name-calling and such. There's a very simple way to make everyone happy here. Dave Eggers, in his autobiography, lists himself as a 3 on the sexual orientation scale, with 1 being perfectly straight and 10 being perfectly gay. I think this is a great system. So why don't we all just each assign ourselves a value, and route our responses through one person, while cross-referencing number-assigned affinities for certain musical subgenres or touchstones within IDM/electronic/ambient, and then average the results both within and across categories? This way, we will be able to *quantify* the heterosexual or homosexual content of each area of music, plus we'll have a definitive orientative value for IDM listeners that we can then contrast to the general music-listening population, should a wider survey become available. I'll do myself as an example, with sample categories (hand-picked for clarity and wide representation) Personal preference ratings from 1 to 10 Gabba/hardcore (obviously MACHO, right?): 2 Ambient:7 Noise: 5 Crunchy Beats: 8 Glitchpop: 9 D(rill)nB: 7 Minimalist Melodies: 6 German: 6.128 larger than my thumb: 10 inaccessible: 4 included in the present classification: 6 part of the problem: 3 soft and squishy, like a marshmallow or a jelly donut: 8 others: 5 Place on sexual orientation scale: 2, embarrassingly enough I'd do all the necessary calculations myself, but... um... I'm really busy these days. So if someone else could step up and offer to run these through an algorithm listwide with weighted averages based on intensity of preferences, we will have our answers in no time at all. What's more, it will be *SCIENTIFIC*. If necessary, we can break it down between males and females. I just hope someone will be able to sort this all out. With fond hopes, Matthew "If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up." ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
