Just wondering if anyone on the list has had much exposure to 'Trans Am' (their on Thrill Jockey Records). Their style is across the board. One track will be a very electronic, and incredible by any musical standard, and the next will be a full-out hard rock extravaganza. I have NO problem with this at all, in fact I enjoy all types of music. The question I have is this : Has anyone heard much of their stuff, and if so what the verdict? I personally think that much of their music stands up to, and in some case surpasses, most IDM that I've heard. I'm just wondering why I've heard not mention of some of the more eclectic stuff that's happening in electronic music (i.e. Torroise, Bis, Stereoloab, Oval) Thanks for your time ;) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Cool, what's your favourite waiata? Rag? Skiffle release? Any qawali singers you'd consider notable now Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has passed on?? ;-) Sorry I'm knee-jerking.. hopefully my point is as blatant as bad acupuncture. ;-)

Yeah, I've heard plenty. The only track of theirs I've really got into is one on a compilation on Mille Plateaux called 'In Memoriam Gilles Deleuze'. Mostly they just leave me cold... they're too blatantly one way or the other for me.

These people have all been discussed on IDM before, from memory. I would've expected more discussion of the new Oval, because he's been embraced by the list for years and it seems more and more people are discussing music in the vein of his material, but hey... There have also been recent discussions on Zammuto and Savath + Savalas, both of whom employ guitars in their (very thislisty) music. Michael np. these guys' first album absolutely rules. Surrender to the Night is also pretty top notch, and Futureworld has some solid solid stuff on it. Their other two albums are pretty forgettable ... they suffer from a bad case of Thrill Jockey-itis, which involves quite a bit of wankery and re-hashing the same old tracks over and over again. The one thing that Trans Am has over most other Thrill Jockey bands is a healthy sense of humour about what they're doing, which shows through their music when they are at their very best. They fuckin' wailed live at Lounge Ax in 1997 but have unfortunately disappointed me ever since then, probably more due to heightened expectations on my part rather than incompetence on theirs. See them if you get a chance. josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Mon, 17 Jul 2000, analog lifeform wrote:

Other two albums? They only have four proper albums -- three of which you just mentioned and praised... There's "The Surveillance" which came out between "Surrender" and "Futureworld"... which I agree is lacking a bit. And there's the "Who Do We Think You Are" mini album which is a just an outtake/remix one-off for an Australian tour.. and that new collection that just came out on Thrill Jockey. 'point' well taken, however, I must append that statement by saying that the music I enjoy the most is stuff the illicts some mental or emotional response from me.

Hmmmm....I guess it's all in what you're looking for. I have to say that reguardless of who's doing what w/ electronics that I use Warp's first AI complilation as the standard by which all others are judged (this is a personal thing). They (Trans Am)have a number of tracks that I feel meet my IDM 'acid test'. I remember the first time I heard that record (AI-1), and how it made me re-examine the way I felt about music in general, and electronic music in particular.

I've seen a few smatterings about Oval, but nothing too in depth. I've have just recently re-subscribed to the list (about a week now), so I have no long-term perspective. I guess I feel that there's quite a bit of really great stuff that's out there that I have yet to hear mention of at all on this list. While I feel that AFX, Squarepusher, and Autechre all posses great skill and genius, there are only so many postings of "do you think that AFX is sending me secret messages in his music?" that I can read through. It would be nice to hear something/someone new as well. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

quoted 1 line Just wondering if anyone on the list has had much exposure to 'Trans Am'>Just wondering if anyone on the list has had much exposure to 'Trans Am'
caught them live once and thought they had an amusing "maleness" thing going on, a real 'boy band'. but the music was pretty mediocre. live, at least, their strong suit seemed to be their Branca-like minimalist guitar band thing. the electro sounding stuff was cute. well, so was the drummer when he took his shirt off. but anyway, despite their good energy and evident wit, I wished they'd gone further in being an innovative rock trio; it seemed like they were revisiting a few art-rock ideas which have been elaborately (and more successfully) explored by others. It does seem that a lot of the musical ideas that are found in electronic music needn't be wed to electronic sounds, and that there should be a lot of really interesting artists who use traditional acoustic intruments to make new music relevent to, say, the IDM list discussion. I suppose I'd hoped for something like that from Trans Am. But it doesn't really seem to be happening as far as I can see. Perhaps the medium is more important than I suspected. kurt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

sampled acoustic instruments are really all over the place in electronic music. the thing I find missing in this genre are traditional instruments traditionally played towards new ends. kurt np: Plaid "trainer" -- so this is the holy grail, huh? not bad actually. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
