12"? reviews? i don't think i've ever heard any four tet material before, whats it sound like? I haven't heard the 12", but a little ramble on Fourtet: Fourtet is Kieren Hebden, who is a member of the instrumental three-piece Fridge (normally their bass-player, from what I saw in concert). His solo stuff might be considered "trip-hop" but if that makes you knee-jerk, forget that. He has some prior releases on Leaf compilations, plus a full length called 'Dialogue' on Output records. Output is run by Trevor Jackson (Skull/Underdog) if that puts anything more clearly in the picture. Rhytmically the music is dominated by hip-hop tempo breaks, normally chopped up and re-arranged throughout a track. On top of that there's often repeating organ-type lines, double bass and one track on his album has someone playing flute. I think his use of flute, though, is a classic example of what I'd find it hard to convey. It's not some noodlesome Herbie Mann action, it's a long series of breathy notes that hang eerily over the backdrop. So don't expect the cheesey side of fusion or anything acid jazz about it. The impression I've had from a brief moment of fanboy-dom when I ran up to talk to him (at a Pole gig, as it happens :) is that Kieren is into a lot of what could be called black music - hip-hop, garage, drum n bass, old US house, jazz (of many kinds, but he was talking about early free jazz). He certainly played stuff across the dancier end of those styles when I saw him DJ. I think his music definitely synthesises this range of influences really well, rather than sounding like a grab-bag of whatever bits he's into at the time. Man, ramble on.. :) Hope this is of some help. If it's any further assistance: I was very surprised to hear about this mix 12". They seem an unlikely pairing.
