So.... I snapped up Pole #3 (the yellow one) on sight today, without listening in the shop; children/time/listening stations full etc. Damn. It's BORING. Dunno. I expected a bit of progress here from 1 and 2, but it's more of the same. Glitch, pop, crackle, dum dum dum, hiss, snap, dum dum dum. Arrrrgh. For R159-99. (That's a LOT, even by generally expensive South African standards). Wonder whether they'll let me take it back? What am I missing here? Huh? And besides, I refuse to be enamoured by anything titled "Fohlenfurz". Sinking to the level of AFX's toilet "humour". i thought it was a little more sparse than 1 & 2 and that the melodies were a bit more thought out than at least 1... but if you didn't like 1 & 2 i wouldn't expect you to like 3. i guess i think of the series as a series of variations (albeit subtle ones) on a theme. the theme being mushy filter dub minus drums and "traditional" instruments. i think 3 is a good number of records to put out for an experiment like this because it gives you enough of a look at the vector he's following and you can pick up on the progression he's folowed through 1-2-3. I hope that he switches to something new instead of doing Pole 4 though. But I have a feeling that the Primary Color motif limits the scope of the series to 3 records. I guess he could go Purple, Green, Orange but it's gonna get monotonous. not that it isn't already ... it just happens to be different enough from anything else out there that it manages to stay interesting to me. alright ... my german is rusty ... what's Fohlenfurz mean? -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Thu, 13 Jul 2000, Irene McC wrote:

And besides, Mike Ink has been there, done that already (Studio 1). It's all a little minimal to the extreme. I do enjoy cover'art' with a bit of bite. And zany graphics. And bits to read and trainspotter vital information :-) Although it must be said that the blueness of the blue one is very very pretty.

i've heard it twice now and it never really struck me as anything memorable... it's certainly not bad but the Pole stuff especially is nowhere near as sonically pure as his LP's oh and back on the Pole tip... i hope everybody is buying the LP (as in the vinyl) instead of the CD's ... the mastering on these records is impeccible. josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Thu, 13 Jul 2000 suction@home.com wrote:

If you've already heard "Cload" on _Osmosis_ (Leaf), you'ver heard 1/4 of the 12". It's pretty nice, but I had expected better. Pole's work is nothing to write home about. Or to this list. It pales in comparison to the Eardrum remix 12", off of which I loved all 4 tracks. I can't determine if I prefer the Sofa Surfers mix at 33 or 45 - if only all the records I bought had the same problem ; ) Speaking of Fourtet, I've enjoyed everyone of his (Kieran Hebden from Fridge) releases. His 12" on Output, "Misnomer" still blows me away in terms of lyricism and layered beauty. "36:25", another single, takes a while to get where it's going but is well worth it. And then there is the "Calamine" single, whose A side that I forget the name of shares a sample with Richard Kirk's _Number of Magic_. Certainly there is more than that to recommend it, but it lacks the focus of the other 12"s. And then let's not forget about the _Dialogue_ full-length on Output that collects 3 tracks from "Misnomer" as well as a version of "Calamine" and some other absolutely beautiful tracks. Buy it on sight. The various comp appearances range from interesting to sublime. I anxiously await the Fourtet remix on Sirkus. When is it coming out? Or maybe I already missed it. I read somewhere of Fourtet being compared to Alice Coltrane, and while the sonics are definitely not the same, the approach is. Layer upon layer in a psychedelic pattern. Kind of like a more mechanical FSOL. Or something silly like that. And if you couldn't tell, I feel that the work Fourtet does is some of the most interesting listening I've experienced the last year or so (next to Spring Heel Jack, Accelera Deck, and Chessie).
