I know that this might be an old one, but how did the different 'artist' names on byte come about? Are they all different combinations of Dowie/Turner/Handley, are they made up entirely, or is there something else. Self indulgent waffle follows. The reason I ask is that, dipping into Illuminatus (cult, ultra paranoid 70s sci fi conspiracy thing, referred to by the KLF and the Shamen, among many others), I found a reference to any five person conspiracy having 5*4*3*2*1=120 permutations and hence 120 sub-conspiracies. This is rather iffy, however, and using my limited grasp of maths, I worked out that the figure actually comes to 31 (not counting the one for zero conspirators). Anyhow, with three conspirators (Dowie, Turner, Handly), you get seven combinations, and there are seven 'artists' on Bytes. Is this coincidence, reference, or because every combination of the three actually appears on the album. Bear in mind that Discordian Popes is also an Illuminatus (/discordia) reference.
