Well, I saw him play a couple of years back, and my experience was much the same as the one you describe. He walked up on stage, put a copy of the same Panacea record on both decks, and proceeded to trainwreck them back and forth for the first few minutes. After another 20 minutes of sloppy mixes of mediocre drum'n'bass records, I left. I like his earlier records (the more experimental stuff - his hip-hop and d'n'b influenced work leave me cold), but I have yet to hear a good word about his live performances, and I find his writing horribly self-important and pretentious. I considered going to see him here in Toronto on Friday night to see if it would be any better, but decided to rent a flick and stay home instead. i saw him a couple years ago here in tampa, and was thoroughly disappointed as well. he was actually doing a live PA though, and had this pretty bad ass congo player. but that was the highlight. so i guess the consensus is that he blows. i don't like his productions either. and i do find him horribly self-important and pretentious as well.

i've heard the exact same thing about him here. he just played in winnipeg and people say it was like the same set he played last year he was here. i watched his set at the DEMF and it just got boring real quick. his actual music is great though so i'm figuring maybe he's too experimental. shaun Greg Clow wrote:

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in and semi-bash Spooky as well. I saw him a couple of weeks ago at the Vancouver Jazz festival and can concur that his set was entirely underwhelming, not at all fun, and I generally felt it was hard to be interested in it. Any time there was even a semblance of rhythm he would try to burry it under some non-descript undistinguishable noise. Also I don't know if any of your shows included his great "visual" set, but that too struck me as underwhelming, but then again I've seen the video for Grammy Winners... However on the lighter side of that night, I did get the catch the Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination who put on one hell of a fantastic show. Very jazzy all the way through, and (with all due respect to Amon Tobin, whose CDs I love) exactly what I think Amon Tobin _should_ have sounded like live. I would add Clifford Gilberto to the list of Ninjas which you must see live, right behind The Herbaliser, Kid Koala, and Hexstatic. The saddest thing about Clifford Gilberto was the line up of the night. The show was organized in the poorest way possible. The New Deal opened (a little peppy jazz trio from Toronto), and were pretty good to get the crowd moving. Then DJ Spooky came on and killed any momentum the show might have had (aside from die hard d'n'd raver kids, nobody was moving). Then on came Jacksoul, who is about the worst excuse for jazz I've could imagine. And finally on came Clifford Gilberto. I have no idea who the show was designed for, because anyone who was there for DJ Spooky would probably not like Jacksoul, and anyone who liked Jacksoul would most definitely hate DJ Spooky. And nobody (except people who were there to see them, and let me tell you, the place got pretty empty) would stay 'till 12:45am at a Tuesday night show to hear a mainly unknown performer play AFTER the headliner has gone on. </diatribe> ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
