I know this kind of talk is discouraged here, but some of might find it a
nice quick read.
Just got back from spinning a planned IDMish/esque set at a friend's house
party. (mostly my gigs are impromptu, but I'd been getting excited about
this for a while).
Anyways, I was on after 5-6 hours of house/techno/d'n'b and other assorted
good dancy stuff. But ofcourse right before me were the techno DJs. They
played a NICE hard set, and I had no clue how to follow up. So I started
out with some Quadrant dubby techno, was nice. set the mood.
kept going on the chill house side of things. Playing something off of
thx3, then into ian pooley, and also notturno (deep 5am house by
beaumont). moved into today's flava of the month IDM, starting with that
new Sky 2 ep by John Beltram, into some Morr music rekkids, and other
assorted glitchy/pretty stuff. Finished with a personal fav - the appolo
rmx of Kinetic by Golden Girls (old r&s track - by one of the hartnols I
think, very sappy, but I love it). I was "commisioned" to play the final
set and kind of mellow out the mood and clear the floor and finally send
everyone home. worked great.
Final verdict: success :) I don't think that anyone really got wrapped up
in things, but taken minute by minute the crowd (and btw, it was mostly
mid 20s+ ppl who know what's what about the current state of EDM) enjoyed
it. So, it can be done.
Only blunder was playing a track off the lexaunculpt double density EP.
it was WAY too sparce and empty sounding. but no matter.
anyone else have any similar experiences?
I really love spinning this stuff out because no one has heard it or knows
what it is. So I get to play teacher DJ.
