i went to 4/5 nights, skipping (of course) the raster-noton show - but i
doubt i would have made it to sunday had i gone..
not really knowing what to expect from the architettura (caipirinha) show i
was pleasantly surprised. it was uncomfortable sitting on the floor
(especially through Alexandre St-Onge's set - wrong crowd, but i think that
even an electroacoustic audience might have become irrate). by the time
panacea hit the stage the pain from sitting on a hard floor for hours was
becoming bearable. not familiar with his material, i was impressed with
most of his set appreciating the restrained looping, his live approach and
the energy he took from the crowd. he was followed by sound track, whom i
had never heard of before. his set started very straight with a bass drum
and hihat kickin so we headed outside to get our blood moving and used the
opportunity to smoke. flyin' high we re-entered the room and were absorbed
by sound track's twist on otherwise fairly straight techno. good stuff,
great feel. was it just me? i'll be checking to see if i can find any of
his material shortly - does anyone know of any releases?
the mille plateaux night had higher expectations to meet up to. it was all
good, my only comments being that i would have preferred if vladislav
delay's set had not started things off. it was hard to focus on the more
ambient material early in the night. also, sutekh (who bombed his laptop -
too much controller info i think, he stood there in disbelief. it was
pretty funny) didn't seem too pleased with his set. maybe that's just me..
some of his mutes and unmutes didn't seem to fall in place rhythmically,
but overall it was smooth. the songs i recognized from pms (? :) stuck
pretty close to, if not the same as, the album versions.
i had been waiting for the next night for months.. thomas brinkmann was in
montreal! his set was catered to a more energetic and dancy vibe, but he
executed with mastery. from what i was hearing, it seemed to fit the
description of soul center, although i can't be sure as i haven't really
heard it. it was leaning more towards house and funk - tasteful though.
he also crashed his setup - but recovered nicely. his more experimental
moments included the alien-earth being voices - "let the method to the
madness begin" - but over a different background, etc. unfortunately i had
to take off sometime just before 3 and might have missed his return to
stage. can anyone tell me if he did play another set and if he played
different material? also did anyone notice what he was using? mainly
interested in the two small panels closest to him.
sunday, was kit clayton, pole and dakca. by this time i had picked up a
cold and was totally burned out. hardly able to stand i stuck around to
catch pole who was using a simple but effective setup (nord?, mixer, cpu,
fx unit). he created a dub paradise constantly tweaking the sounds to
perfection..
my mutek experience
can't wait until next year
bring it on..
