I've been into e-music since I was 12 but I've only known what IDM was for about a year.
Same with me : out of about 500 @ school I'm the only who knows/likes IDM ; some in my class know a few good groups but they're all well known (Fatboy Slim, Prodigy, Chems.) ; they're all thinking of the "techno" stereotype, they all think electronic music is techno and that techno is just repetitive beats.
I mean all kinds of music have some kind of rythm or at least a repetetiveness (I'm thinking of beatless ambient who has only the latter) . If they didn't they wouldn't be worth listening/they would just be noise (well... these two aren't the same thing for some people including (sometimes) me !) .
I have a synth now but no MIDI interface (grr). Of course I've got some software but I'm still fairly limited.
