okay, I'm just musing on a small point here, and the high-hat thread (from
the IDM-making list got me thinking), so here goes:
So much debate goes on with regard to why this genre of music is I -
intelligent - or not, but, uh.. phooey on that I say. I want to know where
the Dance part comes into things.
How much IDM music these days makes you want to jump out of your chair and
start moving? I just finished listening to the Phonetik EP by Phonem. No
Hard driving beats! (good music for sex perhaps, but that's a dance of a
different sort). Arovane? nah, not to dance to. Lily of the VAlley LP,
nope - no grooves there. How about the classic IDM tracks? Maybe they were
just downtempo house and techno of the time.
So what gives?
Most of the stuff we discuss is either ambient with beats or from the
minimal school of techno and house. The latter of which, I'd consider IDM,
but that's certainly not the majority of the most talked about IDM around
here.
So...it's just a point that bugs me. I'm not saying that I'm unhappy with
the current crop of music (tho' that's another thread), but it's funny how
often the D gets ignored. I'm sure many people on this list think that
dancing may be passe and it has no place in IDM, but I'd dissagree.
