i need somebody to explain something to me. what is the reason that kid606 is all the rage? why do people think he's so great? i've bought two of his 7"s, one split 12", and a remix disc... everything that i've ever heard him do has been (IMHO) complete and utter rubish... now, i like cut-up random sounds ala stockhausenandwalkmen... but i see no redeeming value in his tracks. i've seen him live three times, and still don't really see the appeal; though i must admit that he IS more likable live than on his recordings.... mind you im NOT bashing him, i merely would like somebody to explain WHY he's liked among the people of the list... and why he's given so much credit for his works.. i mean, doing the NWA track was great and all, but anybody could have taken that track and run it through a couple of filters and dsped it all to hell (which is all it sounds like to me)... either way... why he's remixing the next depeche mode single doesn't make much sense either... yeah. but go out and get the new morrmusic remix 12"... it's the freshest stuff i've heard in a crows age.... nice little remix by kirk 'as one' d..... where has he been? -kiya iamacopierltd. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i will try my best to explain why i like kid606.. :) for sometime i was hearing of this "stuff" called "ambient hardcore" and "experimental hardcore" -- always wondering what it would sound like and kind of dreaming up the sound in my head (really, i imagined something like the more soft/ambient side of drum n bass, but with a 4-on-the-floor beat rather quick like). i came across by chance 2 examples of this kind of "hardcore" techno.. the first was something by so-cal DJ R.A.W. called "no more mr niceguy" -- pretty neat stuff.. the second was a very appropriatly titled "experimentations in intelligent gabber" (or something very close to that) by a little band called "spacewurm" -- which, as you prolly guessed it, featured the boy we now know as kid606. i then started to find more examples of hardcore that were, to my ears, really puishing the limits of the genre! stuff like praxis (the label, not the laswell related band), ambush and kid606 started really catching my attention. while the praxis and ambush label stuff i was hearing impressed the noisey/crunchy/darky(?) boy in me, the kid606 retained a sense of fun and absurdity that i was not used to in electronic "dance" music. anyway, since then i have been playing close attention to what the kid has been producing, and for the most part find fun in it all! what has impressed me most are his remixes.. especially the stuff of the band "THE LOCUST" (not to be confused with the groovy mark van hoen project.. i mean the san diego punk band). anyway.. so why do i like his music? i guess because it pushes boundaries in fun ways, is quite unpedictable, appeals to the noise kid in me -- but also because some of the production and music is so fucking good. forgive me.. its late, im tired.. but i like his stuff! :) chris. I've only seen him live - he lives not too far from me and did a show at a bowling alley where I've played a few times. My girlfriend thought it was the worst thing ever. I though it was interesting - but I couldn't listen too often. I did record the show on minidisc (w/ mic) but I've yet to listen to it - that show was about 6 months ago. The show I was at was basically a shitload of DSP freakery... but it was definately interesting to listen to. some people got up and left :) they wanted to know when the DJ was going to play something danceable :) Sonic Wallpaper _______________________ http://www.sonicwallpaper.com http://www.mp3.com/live http://www.mp3.com/remixes http://www.mp3.com/junglewarfare http://www.mp3.com/sonicwallpaper http://www.mp3.com/projectcathedral --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Its a question that I've wondered too. I think it boils down to hype. His tracks are pretty mediocre for the most part and why he's even considered to be idm is pretty mind- boggling when most people who go all ga-ga over 606 would turn their noses up at other hardcore and gabber stuff. its the hardcore/gabber aspect that attracted me to him, actually. and i know a few other folks like that too (like a nice dj names "sugar shot" who plays some of the most insane hardcore/breakcore you can imagine :) kid606 is really quite good, imo. one of my fave artists at the moment and certainly not cookie-cutter like. curious where people think the "hype" is coming from? is all the arovane talk "hype"? y'all will eat your words when his 'down with the scene' drops. kid's a hard working and talented producer with a broad frame of reference and a healthy sense of irreverence which obviously gets up the noses of some of the more closed minded of listeners 'round here..He's getting all of the attention and cherry remix jobs for the very reason that he isn't text-book idm (whatever the hell that crap would be!), but a unique musician in constant public evolution, unafraid of creating pure noise one minute and serene melodies the next. It's called individualism and vision, kids. don't be afraid, it's good for you. It's obviously working for him ! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well as far as I can tell the hype is coming out of the press and out of this list. Hype is really what sells records not quality of product. That being said, there are some great discs out now that are getting the hype they deserve -Arvovane and Vladislav Delay are the first that come to my mind. what, so people like myself who like a band are just part of a undesereved hype machine unless its something you like, in which case it is hype that is deserved? thats silly. what makes something hype? and what makes it "deserved"? chris. On Sat, 3 Jun 2000, component wrote:
