I would second the recommendation of "1930" (Tzadik), but I think the best place to start with Merzbow would be the "Batztoutai With Memorial Gadgets" double CD on RRR (or the vinyl if you can find it)- it's really diverse in terms of how the tracks sound and how they're put together, as apparently many of the tracks consist of Masami cutting up and resplicing fairly classic pieces of musique concrete, and so it avoids just being a single huge monolithic wall of noise, which is what he tends to go for these days. FYI, it's _Batztoutai with MATERIAL Gadgets: De-Composed Works 1985-86_. and i second the recommendation for it. it's not yer typical Merzbow. also interesting (while not necessarily this-listy) is Akita's collaboration with Christoph Heeman, _Sleeper awakes on the edge of the abyss_. would probably appeal to the darkambient fans out there. ks -----Original Message----- From: Vague Terrain [mailto:mcess@slip.net] Sent: Friday, December 31, 1999 11:26 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: (idm) Merzbow IS worth checking out I would second the recommendation of "1930" (Tzadik), but I think the best place to start with Merzbow would be the "Batztoutai With Memorial Gadgets" double CD on RRR (or the vinyl if you can find it)- it's really diverse in terms of how the tracks sound and how they're put together, as apparently many of the tracks consist of Masami cutting up and resplicing fairly classic pieces of musique concrete, and so it avoids just being a single huge monolithic wall of noise, which is what he tends to go for these days. who all has heard this? Had it for a bit now. And I will agree that this is quite engaging. Kind of hard to describe. Some of it is familiar sounding but in an odd sense. One of the cdrs reminds me of what minimal techno would sound like if the mego camp did it. Very original and well done. -daniel: Head Monkey: Mad Monkey Records: http://monkey.eliteware.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've heard quite a bit about this CD and am intrigued... Where would one get this CDR pack? g. -- Guillaume Grenier - gollum@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
