(idm) Squarepusher thread: Summarized

A lot of people on here havent had the time to keep up with the HUGE Squarepusher thread, and since SO many people have used SO many words in MANY postings, and used BIG fluffy words and extensive musical backgrounds to state their sides in this debate, ive decided to summarize the whole enchilada in bite-sized, Gen X, MTV kidz terms: Like Squarepusher, ok? he started off, like REALLY cool, he did tons of whacked stuff nobody else was doing back then and it ROCKED. Like it had jazzy riffs (I guess cuz he plays bass) but then it was, like jungle/DnB, even did some rad Acid tracks, and it was neato lo-fi and had too much FX - but it was still way COOL, and he was buds with Aphex, and had stuff on Rephlex, damn he just like rocked, ok?, he rocked! Then he TOTALLY got bored of doin that old stuff, and I guess he like, has a bunch of jazz records or something cuz like that kinda-cheezy jazz stuff, like, took over his sound & vibe, and like all the people who liked his older stuff were getting *totally* pissed off. People were all like "what happend to TJ ?!?", and some were like "Whats the deal? His stuff is all different now!!". Some people talked about evolution and how hes moving on & sick of the old stuff , and other people just thought he was losing his magic and was drying out - kinda like those Wacky-Wall Walker things that youd throw on a window and it would slowly goo-climb its way down, but if you dont wash it with soap and keep it moist it gets like, hair and fuzz all over it and it just falls off the wall instead of sticking - I KNOW you know what im talking about. But a lot of people LIKE jazz, but then even THOSE people started fighting cuz he was either a poseur for copying real jazz, but then some people LIKE HIS own way of doin jazz, even though it was , well kinda poseur-ish so then POW!!, BOOM!!, P-CHAA!!, ZING -PSSSH! they would all like fight the REAL pure-jazz lovers, and PCHOOM, BANG , BLAMMO! CHOP! BOOSH! - anyway, it was like, really flame-city.. (huh, hehe.it was RAD...) So then like, his latest LATEST stuff still has that jazz stuff some people like, and some people DONT like, but then like SOME of the trax have some of that old-school TJ vibe, so some people are like "well maybe the old Squarepusher is back??" - and then other people are like "Nah, his head is TOO far up his ass" so now everybody is like, waiting for the next few albums to see what his deal is. OK - like, whatever, or something ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-1156 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Fort Worth, Texas --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There is one thing that hasn't been explicitly mentioned, and i'd like some clarification... and i happened to notice this quote from some other post (i forgot who) that alluded to the issue:
quoted 1 line>
is doing original percussion again! Thought Lunatic and Brace Yourself were just Mike listening to Vibert copying Squarepusher coping Aphex. God damn you, Richard, and that blasted Hangable Autobulb EP! < so my question is, wasn't the early squarepusher just as derivative as the newer squarepusher? i remember when i first heard it, i thought for sure it was an aphex alias because it sounded so much like hangeable autobulb 1. (alot of people in record stores were even saying this!) and as an afterthought, why should it matter who he sounds like (i mean, sure it matters, but if you like it, well...). it's like when we get a top-rate autechrealike... as far as i'm concerned, it's as though i get hear twice as many ae releases in a year! that's great! >>>...back to the subject...>>>
quoted 1 line don't get me wrong, I _don't_ think squarepusher>>>don't get me wrong, I _don't_ think squarepusher
"sucks" or is a rip-off artist; actually i remember -loving- squarepusher at one point... and i'm not even a d&b fan... and pretty much all the artists making electronic dance/listening music that i love have ripped off aphex pretty noticeably even if indirectly (e.g., people who rip off autechre) -> ->Off the top of my head mouse on mars is an exception... i think... of course we're strictly talking about what is ordinarily classified as dance/listening/armchair kind of stuff... ok let's pretend i didn't go there... ANY hoo, it doesn't matter whether i like squarepusher or to what extent "influences" have been "ripped off" vs. "absorbed"... my question is: Didn't HAB 1 predate similar squarepusher material? Because they are friends; and because the release dates of the material are very close, i'm hoping for someone "in the know" to confirm/disconfirm this... or point me to an interview or something maybe.
