Lance is quite right--they're really very weird takes on the territory Mike Ink covers in the Studio 1 records, but they wander pretty far away from that, too. Each record is pretty different--one even heavily samples Eric B. & Rakim. I want to get some Thomas Brinkmann, but I'm not sure what to get. I heard a live set (recorded) by him, and it piqued my interest. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Also, I remember seeing someone slag the Warp 10+3 series recently (I'm a little late on this I guess). I can't speak for classics or influences, but remixes is one of the best disks I've gotten this year. That Red Snapper remix of The Sabres of Paradise is worth the price of the disk IMO. Any of his 12" are excellent -- depending on what you can find. Also the Soul Center CD which is a revalation to me. What a lot of people may not be aware of is that Thomas has an array of releases. Some personal experimental minimal music, and some what he calls as exp 'sounds'. His Studio Variations of Mike Ink's works on Profan and Concept: VR remix of Richie Hawtin's Concept series on M_nus are recommended. These have been done via discovery of extraneous dynamic 'sounds' produced through his 30 kg plate custom turntables and 2 tone arms with 2 separate cartridges. If you are more interested in his 'music', then check out the Max Ernst and Freund series. It is more on a Surrealist minimal trip (or I am just subconciously influenced by the word Ersnt?) His Esther Brinkmann project focusses more on energies inspired by his late sister whom he didn't know for long but somehow has made a connection to her through sound experimentation. Spooky? OK, On a technical note, I have toying with the perrenial sound querry of "Does the CD version extend the dynamics of TB's variation, compared with the vinyl version?" This is purely a digital v analog transfer Q; As the variations were recorded via vinyl, do the sounds exposed transfer better through digital audio or does it lose the dynamics when analog (use of dub plates) transfer is applied. What would TB have to say?? What would he prefer? Does the Cd version elicit sounds which we would't find on vinyl? Is this music idm or imm (intelligent minimal music)? Anyone? A friend who's exchanged emails with TB sez that Brinkmann is fascinated with vinyl's decay--the fact that each time it plays, it sounds a little different.
