Leaf Newsletter #30 May 16th 2000 NEW RELEASE Invisible Soundtracks Volume IV release date: Monday June 12th 2000 formats: limited edition 1,000 x 12" only (REEL 4) mail order price: 4.00 GBP (+p&p) barcodes: UPC 0666017010465 Over two years in the making, the fourth volume in Leaf's renowned Invisible Soundtracks series of 12"s materialises in June. A limited edition of 1,000 copies, this 12" edition comprises four brand new tracks to be included on the forthcoming Invisible Soundtracks : Macro 3 CD compilation. All tracks are exclusive and specially commissioned for the project; as ever, the brief was to produce an evocative piece of music for an imaginary film. The results are always fascinating, often startling, and demand close listening attention. Returning to the series' original premise of bringing to the surface unknown talent from around the globe, Volume IV presents one debut release, and three compositions by little known producers offering cuts from Canada, Germany, Austria and the UK. 'Anna And Nina' is Manitoba's first ever release, an epic and ambitious track that falls somewhere between the adventurous forays of Kieran Hebden¹s Four Tet project and the lush harmonies of Zero 7. Manitoba is a young jazz pianist from Toronto by the name of Dan Snaith and we know you¹ll be hearing a lot more from him soon... Bernhard Fleischmann is an unassuming chap from Vienna, whose beautiful 1999 album Pop Loops For Breakfast (Morr Music / Charhizma) exhibited a remarkable ear for melody - a midget gem of a record that has sold in significant quantities on word of mouth alone. Freeform is probably the best known name here, with releases on Warp, Skam, Sub Rosa, Sprawl and more to his name, though Londoner Simon Pyke's recent work has been largely overlooked. This brand new track is, in our opinion, one of his best ever releases, alien funk of incredible dexterity and depth, and quite unlike anything you¹ve ever heard before. Respect is long overdue. >From Rosenheim, Germany, Klaus Naitana and Vinko Vrabec - aka Druckwelle - came to our attention with the first release on their own tiny Molar imprint, the incredible Montreal '76 EP, and we've been wanting to work with them ever since. Invisible Soundtracks : Macro 3 will be released in July, including exclusive tracks by Rothko, Lee Norris (Metamatics/Norken), Susumu Yokota, Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey/Spleen) and Op:l Bastards, amongst others, as well as the four tracks here. Cert A 1. Manitoba - ŒAnna And Nina¹ 2. B. Fleischmann - ŒThe Rise And Fall Of A Drinker¹ Cert AA 1. Freeform - ŒSpandoe¹ 2. Druckwelle - ŒUnteracherting¹ SUSUMU YOKOTA - Mix EP release date: Monday June 19th 2000 formats: 12² only (DOCK 23) mail order price: 4.00 GBP (+p&p) barcodes: UPC 0666017010762 Susumu Yokota¹s reputation in Europe is growing fast, with media acclaim for his two downtempo Leaf releases (Image 1983-1998 and Magic Thread) and his most recent albums for Japanese house/techno label Sublime (1998 and 1999). The Mix EP successfully brings together boths strands of his work, with satisfyingly warm deep house mixes of his own acoustic, more ambient tracks. Taken from an album of remixes of tracks originally released on his own Skintone label in Japan late last year (also entitled Mix), these tracks sound like a return to the roots of house music, leaving the idiosyncratic glitches and mistakes in place to give a more human feel. The originals of three of these tracks (ŒNisemono No Uta¹, ŒMorino Gakudan¹ and ŒEnogu¹) appeared on Yokota¹s first Leaf release, Image 1983-1998, while the fourth, ŒNaminote¹, is taken from his next album, Sakura, to be released by Leaf in September. Yokota is already putting the finishing to another Skintone album, and his next Sublime album (entitled Zero) is due imminently. If that wasn¹t enough, the in demand DJ is to release his first ever mix album on Skintone, using only music from The Leaf Label. He has also contributed an exclusive track to the forthcoming Invisible Soundtracks : Macro 3 compilation. A1. Naminote / Rhythm Mix A2. Morino Gakudan / Remix B1. Enogu / Remix B2.
