i can't understand why there hasn't been more discussion here of esa's lackluster: container. it's luscious. simple, emotional melodies, some light and fragmented percussive programming, all in all great stuff. tracks recorded from 97 - 99 apparently. devotees of isan, boc, aspen, plaid, hab are highly recommended to pick this excellent LP on focus up. peeeeeeeeeeece, -- Jeff Davis pHlow@earthlink.net fn:216.533.6303 fx:216.266.2310 text:2165336303@mobile.att.net pHlow.linx: home.earthlink.net/~phlow/ Bochum Welt: www.bochumwelt.com Rotator Locator: hyperreal.org/music/rotator/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I wholeheardedly agree. The new Lackluster album on Focus is an excellent exapmle of the warm sweeping melodic idm with a very nice classic feel. In fact, I have yet to be disappointed with ANY of the releases on the Focus label so far - CiM's Warm Data ep, Lackluster's s/t ep, and the Do You See? comp ep. The next release on Focus will be a full-length from CiM entitled Reference and if it's anything like his previous releases on Focus and Delsin, then were in for another treat. i think mauver is definitely top notch, especially like the rhymes on side 1a -- definitely some very original production styles involved music is a rotted one note definitely has its moments, probably about 75% of the way there but at times i think TJ has just opted to do a bit of a piss take, not that it doesn't sound great even when he's taking it. the subsequent ep's all shine to me though ... i think it's a great thing for an artist to be able to reinvent their style whenever they want, and it's definitely indicative of the integrity of record labels like Warp that they would permit one of their star acts to take such a veering left turn ... at the same time I think nobody drops the beats like squarepusher so it's good to see him return to the more dance-oriented styles on Selection 16. Although I wish he had stayed a bit more left-field in the vein of Maximum Priest ... there are a couple tracks on there that merge his more dancey style with sounds that you won't find on any other dance record (mic'd drum kits, weird non-Akai approved loops, etc.). That said, Dedicated Loop is the HOTTEST track i've heard from TJ in forever and it's no wonder you hear it on the BBC during commercial breaks... when an artist of Jenkinson's skill goes experimental and veers off the track for a while, it can only add to the pallette that they bring to their craft, i think this is definitely evidenced by both Maximum Priest and Selection 16. josh -- String Theory Ultra Audio Dimension http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/

Yeah the music 'contained' on "Container" is good, but not to put to fine a point on it I think you'll find that there has been a lot of talk of these tracks in the past when they were released on cdr back in 98-99. No I don't own "Container" but I do have the 2 cdr's and hence from what I am lead to believe I have all the tracks on Container and more. So possibly for people on this list who would have gotten the music a year or two ago you'll find they talked about it when it originally came out and/or don't own Container as they own the cdr's and hence don't see the need to talk about it. Just suggestions on my part as to why it may not have been talked about recently on this list. I'll probably get around to picking it up cheap off somebodies sale-list one day soon as musically it's great simple, emotive stuff and I do eagerly await some new material from Esa. both cdr#1 and cdr#2 were put out in 99. of the tracks on cdr#1, 2 have been used (meanwhile, thor's magic bathtub). of the tracks on cdr#2, 5 have been used (starcell u.k., me me me me me me, cull streak, bothersome (mother mix), 20333). that still leaves 7 tracks on cdr#2 and 10 tracks on cdr#1. since 'meanwhile' was for foc349 12" only, the amount of tracks that are on container that people who have cdr#1+cdr#2 have, is 6. 5 if you don't have cdr#1. and yes container=compilation and of course compilation != "debut" album

i think container hasn't been discussed on the list mainly because it's been out for quite a short while. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Great, thanks for that. So what tracks (titles, thanks) are exclusive to "Container"?
