Sorry to spam y'all who aren't from Philly, but: Any of you Philly folks know somewhere remotely interesting to go in the city that I should visit (i.e., clubs, bars, etc)? I'm from Philly, but haven't been there for ten years. Going back for the old reunion and haven't a clue what's cool in the city any more, and I'm afraid I'll end up at Zipperhead or JC Dobbs... Any ideas? I'm gonna be in town Fri and Sat nights.... Thanks... -Cf --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

also at the 700 club, every tuesday (ish), slipping into sublimnity plays. they're a very interesting improv free-electronic-space-jazz band. synth guitar, sax, samplers, violin, and turntables is the usual lineup, but they add others sometimes. they're quite good. and another record store to check out is...is...dammit, i forget the name. right under fluid next to the latest dish. outside of that, the philly idm scene is zilch. as far as i know, there are only four of us on idm from the area. * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# icq: 5562209 never been closer to heaven/never been further away --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

electronic superstars fingernail and flowchart live in philadelphia. the "digital underground" recordstore is good for coil/nurse with wound-eque stuff. the italian market is good for bootlegged copies of movies still in theatres. -J. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it's excellent. every second and fourth tuesday. don't forget the sitar. under normal conditions this seems like it would be too much, but they're all very comfortable playing off of eachother and are careful to mix themsleves in properly. john (the dj) and his wife gloria (the violinist) i think are the only mainstays. and to tell they truth, they're all that's required. ambient conversation music. mentel floss is usually every third thursday, i think. and you'll want to check out every last thursday at silk city (5th and spring garden). and almost every friday at fluid.

611. also try spaceboy (5th and south) and cue records (next to 611), in the vacinity. also the philadelphia record exchange (5th and south) and digital underground (5th and south). also repo records, which i think is on 7th and south. it's west of tower records, and near that crepe shop that no one eats at.

If you can tolerate Porsche-driving yuppies on cell phones trying to run you over, and if you can stand loud, drunk 40-year-olds dropping cigar ash, halitosis and vodka on your shoes, then Manayunk's cutting-edge Edge is for you. The last time I was there the DJ seemed to mix it up. Dress for success. Better yet, forget IDM and head to the Brock St Pub a couple of blocks down the street, where Eddie Money and George Thoroughgood sometimes show up to break shit up.

digital underground and Repo Records are my favorite stores. Their IDM selection is excellent if you can't wait for mail order and need your fix immediately. 611's import selection is rediculously overpriced ($30 for Aphex's Girl/Boy?) and the staff are effete snobs. Fuck 'em. go here: http://www.simpletone.com for a fairly comprehensive site about the idm/ambient happenings in philadelphia. includes artist/dj profiles, weekly happenings, venues and record stores. a great resource for the philadelphia local.

i agree that the 700 club doesn't attract the kind of people i normally want to be around, but sean oneal and erin anderson (flowchart) and chris (tleilaxu) (and together they're mental floss) and john schenk and his wife gloria (slipping into sublimity) play some of the best music to be heard in the city. and besides, the 700 club has one of the best selections of beer in the city. if you get a chance, check out the magnetique nights at silk city (or any other even happening there). silk city and fluid are in my opinion the most pleasant venues in the city. silk city has been having some great events, and fluid is catching up. silk city : 5th and spring garden. fluid : between south and bainbridge on 4th street above the latest dish next to 611 and cue.

they're not snobs, they're just stuck in thier own little house world. has probably the best techno selection though. (jamie morris buys for them) i don't know house, but it seems to be the house hub of philly. i highly suggest spaceboy records. on 5th and south above zipperhead. the store has the absolutely best selection in philadelphia, spanning most genres of music. john and scott are the very nice and will help you find anything you're looking for. if they don't have it in stock, they'll order it and if you're not local, goto spaceboymusic.com and they'll ship anything you want. if it's electronic and they don't have it, you can try the philadelphia record exchange and then 611 in that order. the record exchange is cheaper than 611. but you should start with spaceboy. slurp, ok. -eric --- eric sherman octorock@doubtful.com doubtful productions www.doubtful.com -------------------------------------- Organize, communicate, and publish for FREE!
