in my experience (working at WXYC in Chapel Hill, NC) "IDM" labels typically don't send promos to college radio stations, even if you ask them nicely. I suspect this is largely an economic issue, as many small labels just can't afford to send promos to places where none of their records are in the shops anyway, especially if the label is overseas. however, I also suspect that greed and ego play a part in this equation. if your college is in a big city it's probably easier, but I still wouldn't count on it. I couldn't even get a promo copy of stewart walker's new one from Force, Inc. when I booked him to play a show here. that said, persistence can pay off. labels that have sent us promos in the past include: touch/or, sprawl/suburbs of hell, ninja tune, wordsound, alien8, m-nus, K7, uh, and I'm sure a few others. you'd think that college radio would be fertile ground for this stuff, but we've found it much easier to get promos from French-Canadian electroacoustic labels than your average "IDM" label. technics 1200s are the standard for DJ turntables, although the numark PRO-TT1 and TT1910 are both pretty nice. the pro has a reverse switch, 78 speed and +/- 10% pitch control, but I've never used one - I think vestax makes a DJ turntable also. whatever you get, make sure it's direct drive & weighs more than 20 pounds. e
