Phonem - The Mechanic Verses LP [JetLag (JG002, 1999)] (limited to 300 copies) A1. blipblop C1. coax 9 B1. exon d.t. D1. velkro B2. dust engine D2. network down Elliot 'Phonem' Perkins' previous 12", 'Phonetik' on the Morr Music label, sounded to me like Autechre' most melodic moments, so I was eager to hear this new release. This collection is of some of his earlier work, and the tracks featured have a harder edge, more hip hop influenced side to them, than those on the previous 12". This isnt a bad thing though, as the whole LP flows along there are melodies and rhythms oozing out of every track. With vocal snippets in several of the tracks and broken beats this release makes enjoyable listening... This is one of my favourite releases of 1999 along with his 12" on the Morr Music label. The mechanic verses release has a great hip hop feeling, with some excellent use of vocal cuts. Smallfish had copies last night of this 2x12" pack, as well as the Morr Music 12".
