Hey, I'm new to this list. I don't know much about idm (definately not enough to decipher most of the posts), but am looking to learn more. One of the reasons I joined is because I like the Aphex Twin and want to hear other artists in the genre. Are there any good compilations I could get or mp3's I could download (preferably mp3's, as I am poor). Also what are some good internet resources? I would appreciate any help. i won't give you any recommendations on mp3 pirating (i'm against it for the most part) but you can always get legal mp3s at http://www.notype.com (which i kind of run -- check the stuff by kalx, tracing limelite, darck, oeuf korreckt...) & http://www.mono211.com (highly recommended) among other sites. obviously mp3.com is always good, if it hasn't given you cooties yet. as for cds... for some wacked out drill n bass action (like 'richard d james'-era aphex twin), i would recommend: - solar x 'little pretty automatic' (worm interface) - animals on wheels 'designs & mistakes' (ninja tune) - bogdan raczynski 'boku mo wakaran' (rephlex) - u-ziq 'lunatic harness' or the new one 'royal astronomy' (astralwerks (i think)) (there's probably more, but those will give you a good intro). more mellow stuff which you'll probably be interested in: - boards of canada 'music has the right to children' (matador) - jake mandell 'parallel processes' (worm interface) - funkstorung 'additional productions' (k7) - autechre 'amber' (warp) i don't buy many compilations so i can't really help you there, but the 'alternative frequencies' series (worm interface) is always commendable, & you can always try something like '0161' (vvm/skam) if you want to be introduced to the more noisy side of idm. as these may not be easy to find through most record stores, try the more indie stores in your town. if you can't find those records there, then order online. autechre & boards of canada, for example, can be found easily at cdnow, but for those really-hard-to-find ones, forced exposure <http://www.fe.org> is always a reference. hope this helps -- other listmembers feel free to add up to this. -- david

... and when we are talking about drill n bass, i think we have to mention squarepusher - but i'm not sure i recomend him. i find his music very annoying, and everytime i listen to it, i get a headache. well, there are people who like him, anyway. i haven't heard his latest releases, though. has he gone more - ehrr - jazzy, or am i very wrong now? speaking of bogdan raczynski... his "samurai math beats" isn't that bad - it's pretty good actually - or pretty funny, you might want to say instead. well, i say both. buy it, if you have some money. bye-bye. / thomas ------------ thomas lennartsson thomas.lennartsson@mbox302.swipnet.se http://home5.swipnet.se/~w-51503/

After listening to Photek I always get a headache - it must be the tension or something of those damn crazy beats. Anyway, I take two Advil, wait 20 minutes, then put on a disc.

Like Wells said, it seems that we may have forever lost Tom from the HND/FMWT days of greatness to his fusion/free jazz/whatever "roots." How I long for the days of Vic Acid!

To my ears, Squarepusher hasn't really changed *that* much. I often get shrieks of disgust when I suggest there's not an awful lot of difference between something like 'Hard Normal Daddy' and 'Music is Rotted One Note'. I think it's because a lot of people, when they listen to pre-MIRON Squarepusher, tend to hear the drum/drill & bass first and the jazz second. For me, it's always the jazzy elements I hear first -- hence the reason MIRON sounds in a similar vein to his earlier work. Of course, MIRON, Budakan Mindphone and Maximum Priest are all progressions, of a sort. The psychotic cut & paste elements are being phased out for a softer compositional style, but the energy and grooves of Tom's stuff still remains constant. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/

No. Never. Vee Ah Ze Kraftverk Rrrobotts. Hang in ... it gets better. Let's discuss MOBY :-) Much against my better judgement I must say that Honey really rocks (opener on "Play"). And Natural Blues is very haunting.
