If you like 70's europop with a little German folk influence and recorder (the acoustic instrument {gasp}), get Autobahn. If you like more experimental synth sounds blended with krautpop and a pinch of folk, get Radioactivity. If you like a haunting, moody and trance-inducing sound (not trance style), get Trans-Europe Express If you like Analog Sci-Fi sounds, get Man Machine. If you like upbeat, clubby sounds with originality and pizazz, get Computerworld. (**my pick for KW first listen**) If you want to hear Ralf and Florian breathing hard, get Tour De France. If you like samples and 80's post-modernism, get Electric Cafe. If you like dance mixes and want an overall smattering of their work, get The Mix. If you want to hear Kraftwerk blending into rave culture and not being so original, get their new record (released 12/99?) And lastly, if you want to round out your collection, or would like to hear a 'pre-synthesizer dominated, kind of prototype' get Kraftwerk 1 or Kraftwerk 2. Wouldn't recommend these two for first listen, though. Hope that helped, but it probably confused. Lotsa of people here probably have already heard a taster. The old theme to the PBS show "Newton's Apple" was pre-R&F Kraftwerk -- "Ruckzuck", from KW1, I think. -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Kraftwerk actually released 3 albums before Ralf And Florian: _Tone Float_ (as Organisation), _Kraftwerk_ and _Kraftwerk 2_. These also happen to be their most interesting albums, though Ralf and Florian seemingly would like the world to forget they ever existed. Granted, and, really, every Kraftwerk album should be heard and heard often (except for _Electric Cafe_). We're talking apples and oranges, and very tasty ones at that. As someone who's heard the entire catalog, I say with the utmost sincerity that the first 3 albums contain some of the most strikingly creative music *of any genre* that I've ever heard. These are not the records that ignited the techno revolution, but they nevertheless should be heard by anyone interested in the possibilities of inventive, unconventional sound. (In that sense, these albums should be of invaluable worth to IDM listees.) I don't know about 'most interesting' -- maybe 'most interesting to people who like Can and Faust.' They are a lot more diffuse and improvisatory than the later Kraftwerk stuff. I personally am much more fascinated by the post-autobahn stuff. They pulled off an art-prank more audacious than the KLF, implementing an agenda that owes a lot to the Futurists, and selling it to the world as Pop Music. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i've just taken a stroll through cdnow to see if kraftwerk 1/2 were easy to find & they didn't have any of them. do you know if these are completely deleted or is it still possible to find them anywhere? i heard from a friend also that they're great records. considering the only things i know from kraftwerk are the horrible 'mix' cd & the cover of 'the model' by big black, it's probably time i get to know them better, though i'm mostly interested in the period you describe here. ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

From what I understand, they've never been *legally* available on compact disc. Still, I often see the bootlegs (usually done very well) in quality record stores and mail-order places (look for the traffic cones on the covers). After having CD-R copies of them for awhile, I got a really nice two-disc set earlier this year from Reckless in Chicago that includes Kraftwerk 1, Kraftwerk 2, Ralf & Florian, and some bonus live material. I thought $50 was a pretty good price, considering I usually see 1 & 2 going for $15-$20 each... Can't remember what it's called though -- I'll look at home and get back next week. But yeah, quality-wise, all three albums are very nice... .John. Yeah sure but you'll have to pay hard cash for those... In Europe they are going around 50$ for very bad copies... However: they have been compiled on a double album on Philips packaged in a gatefold sleeve...
