Another freeware player for mac is SoundApp
http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~franke/SoundApp/
hint: for other options, go to www.versiontracker.com and search for mp3.
quoted 2 lines the one thing i do need is a good mp3 encoder for the mac that is free.

yes. it's a little tricky though. you'll have to piece it together
yourself. It'll be slow, but it creates better quality mp3s than a
lot of the shareware encoders.
first, go here and get mp3 encoder 0.12
http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~d2linjo/mp3/
then go here for a free Macromedia encoding engine:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/soundedit/how/shock/
download the link that says "version f1 Download Now!"
once you decompress (using stuffit expander) you'll see:
"SoundEdit16 SWA Updates" folder. open the "SoundEdit 16 SWA Xtras
Folder" within there. Take the file that's called "SWA Export Xtra"
and throw it in the same folder as "mp3 encoder 0.12"
Run the encoder once to change your settings to your preference, then
quit. Then drag n' drop all the AIFF's you please onto the encoder
icon. take a long walk :) voila!
