Hail brethren,
I bring you good tidings, the events of last night were quite amazing
indeed. Here's the setup:
1. 3 great IDM artists playing in the crime capital of California.
2. A rave, named "Happy" is occuring in the same building, hundreds of
burn-out fuckups wandering between extreme breaks and minimal tech danger.
Analysis of the music:
Jake Mandell- Great stuff, what I recall are bouncy ill-timed breaks combined
with vivid programming and a lot of hunching. The sounds were non-etheral
like I like 'em, and occasionally quite danceable.
Unit- Whoa!! Damn glad I caught this gentleman, basically his set reminded
me of harsher breakbeat attacks from such contemporaries as C. Fringelli and
the whole breakcore gang. However, Unit adds some ambient weirdness and odd
melodies about the whole construction. My favorite parts in his sets were
the following: Melodic 6 note, melodic 6 note, melodic 6 note (slightly
changing each time, the candy ravers were digging it) then NOIZE!! HA!!
That was jarring! I also liked this sample: "There are people with no
legs.....that need my help." (Repeated twice) "Smack that bitch." O_o
Truly some crazy stuff, didn't his album just come out on caipiranha? Gotta
find that.
Stewart Walker- It's amazing how someone so bookish can create sounds so
fierce and attacking. Missile minimal tech that changed up a lot and never
ever left me bored. I danced the whole time, straight tribal attack!
Everyone was into it, even the rave crowd, there was this girl in front of me
literally screaming every time he'd add or subtract a layer. I've heard a
lot of tech in my days and this was some of the best. Hell we even had
mandell on stage with some other guy getting fucking JIGGY to the tech!
Energy! Then the set ended. Stewart shouts: "Do you want more?!" (Alec
Empire style). Crowd responds: "Yes! All hail our physical dominator"
Thus, the music continued.
Met some listers there, I must say my favorite quote of the night was when an
anonymous goat went up to one of the rave promoters looking for the IDM
saying:
"We're not looking for your fucking rave, we're looking for the
hyper-intelligent electronic music show!"
(Or something to that effect)
Hurrah! What a fun night, I'm off to see Takemura, 'tis a good week for LA
goats!

"The goal of any writer is to acknowledge the numeric, programmed basis of
his mind, and then supercede it. First one must explore the agonizing limits
of patterns, their octahedral vultures and box-shaped emotions. After
patterns are mastered, we seep into the mist of the patternless, passing
through the thickest and thinnest of atmospheres. At each stage, patterns
and non-patterns are grafted atop and within the gray matter of one's mind.
At the nova point of summation the scar heals, erupts and bleeding anarchy
blossoms like a larval butterfly."
