Okay here is my big existential thought of the day...... All this music is getting me uptight, for it seems, just like other desires, that its nothing but a damn bottomless pit that can never be filled. What to do, what to do....From one release to another, from one artist to another, from house to Techno, to ambient........ I agree. I spend so much money on this stuff and I only ever want more. I go to the record shop every day and get wound up by all the stuff I want but can't afford. Then I buy it anyway and end up with no money. From another guy who "knows" what you are feeling, try: 1. Go on holiday, or at least dont listen to any music or read idm lists for one month. 2. You are showing signs of "phantom writer's block", try making music of your own. 3. Listen to 70s music only. These are just ideas but I find they help this "condition". ----- Original Message ----- From: Kelley Hackett <khackett@aba.iupui.edu> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 1999 12:41 PM Subject: (idm) All this Music

Don't listen to ANY (?) music for a *month* - - - - eeeep! I'd have to be severely sick to go through with that. Sheesh, is cold turkey really the only antidote to this condition?! For the record, I've just bought the new Luke Slater, fresh from the box here in Cape Town sunny SA - up to track 7 and waiting for "All Exhale" to strike. My my, Lukey-Boy sure has drifted from his Four Cornered Room days :-) I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Want to know the two worst culprits for this phenomenon?: This list and mail-out updates. There are so many kind folks here on this list that continually talk about releases and artists that the demand most definitely exceeds my means. Also, what's even worse/better, almost anyone such as Lance are virtual compendiums of IDM knowledge who can lay down a tight review for you. If you are unsure or out of the loop, just ask and you usually receive. It's definitely a double-edged sword; I've advanced so much in IDM from this list but my account has certainly suffered! I always do all of my business through Dave at EAR/Rational and seeing his monthly updates makes me crazy. I always think, well- people seemed to like Hrvatski and now Dave has Oiseaux '98-'99...oh, everyone has been raving about the new Mouse on Mars- hey, only $14.50 plus shipping! My endless obsession with this damn genre will be the end of my financial well-being. John ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I want to go to New York next month, but my addiction is so bad I've spent £250 since payday last Friday. It's so bad when Kelley mailed me privately to remark on the comment I sent to the list we just ended up talking about music as a result of which I went straight out and bought a Stasis album. Trouble is, I work just round the corner from Berwick Street in Soho and it's like IDM heaven there. I just can't keep out of the record shops. Nice to know I'm not the only one. Maybe we could start IDM Anonymous or something. I heard you, this week was $600 for me because I didn't order for the last two. Then I just totaled up everything I've written down to pick up and it's well over $1,000. Yikes! I hate this saying, cos it sounds really new age, but this is one time I do believe it, so I'll say it: A happy person wants the things they have, rather than having the things they want. I've got plenty of music I love, so if I hear something else that sounds great I constantly ask myself "Do I need this? Couldn't I just go and listen to <x>?". Often my answer is still "Yeah, I goddamn _need_ this", but, well, in my mind, there's quite a difference between liking a tune and wanting to own it. It dawned on me that a lot of stuff that gets rated on this list may well be great, but I already have a lot of music I love. So why stress about what I'm missing? Mr. Upton, perhaps U took me wrong, and then again, perhaps U didnt.... As for me, and there are several who know it.....Nuron, B12, Stasis, John Beltran, Global Communication and D. May and a few others shake my bush......and as of lately, I have really been listening to a shit load of Stasis! Now, two of the artist dont record anymore, at least one(Nuron) and the other is recording music in a different vein(Stasis)! So, to some degree my line stops here.....J. Beltran isnt as lush as he used to be....and EVERYTHING CHANGES....sooooooo... My thing is rather that there is no stopping point, in some ways. But I agree with your statement about wanting the things that U have.... and that's why I am Smashing this Stasis, Inspiration right now as we speak........
