Hey Christopher,
James would have been the first one to tell you not to go. After the first
show my ears were numb. They didn't actually begin to ring until six o'clock
the next night.
That was actually my first performance, and I was quite proud to do it with
the likes of V/VM. This tour was one half of the original v/vm, Andy stayed
home to continue the Jansky routine. I don't know what was more
entertaining, hearing the music or watching this man in a ridiculous pig
mask nodding his head along to it. I went to both shows at Churchill's, a
disgusting punk-rock venue/English pub. Quite fitting.
Needless to say I brought along my earplugs for the second show. A lot of
butchered pop tunes plus the British national anthem summed up his
repertoire. After the ear-bleed beginnings I remembered why I was so
excited to get a chance to see him perform, it was truly amazing. The
sentimental feel of the pop songs mixed with the awful sounds he created was
very moving. "ChartRunners" is one of my all time favorites albums. Though
James and Andy weren't completely responsible for all the tracks, it still
contains the amazing, distinct v/vm sound that I think is a perfect child of
the idm output. Vaudville lives on in this work. I love Autechre, Aphex,
Schematic, MaS, et al., and the v/vm work and performances belong just as
much to the Hall of IDM Fame. To leave them out or write them off is to
take this music too seriously, or not seriously enough for that matter.
He and Ashtray Navigations still have some east coast performances left, if
they are coming to your town make the trip.
