you never realize how many records you have till you move, which i have recently done. i'm talking crates upon crates upon crates. i had crates hidden in the closet under clothes. records that i had forgotten were even made. so this month i have commenced to organizing them. god forbid i sell them. that would be like selling my children. i dont know about doing the recently purchased thing, ive tried that, and that is probably how some of my old records ended up in the closet. so i have done it by artist, favourite first (at least favourite for the time being, my taste changes with the wind) then so on and so forth. ah but wait what about those pesky compilations, does mealtime go with mike p., or rdj, or jega, none of the above it goes in the compilation section. after that i like to go by labels. this can get tricky as well because you have one artist on about a million different labels. that is why i like to go by artist first. i have decided to pull all of my records out of their crates every two or three months and shuffle up the classification, that way i can yet again rediscovery old treasures i had forgotten about. anyways there is my three cents, spend em where you want bye bye ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

lets drag this out some more... (how long does pressing delete take?)... to my mind, the best organisation is complete chaos: scatter records everywhere, dig through a pile to find the one you want, mix them with floppy disks, books, coffee cups... As you shuffle through them, every record gradually shifts to its natural position; the one where you subconsciously know it SHOULD be. This also works with racks, but more gradually. By way of pretemtiousness, there's a passage in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance (I don't have it to hand) describing an old mechanic. Although his tools are spread out around his workshop in no apparant order, he can reach out and pick up exactly what he want.
