how do you classify your cds & vinyls? i'm asking because i've recently bought a cd tower & i must have spent hours just debating that question with myself: how do i classify them? of course, putting them in alphabetical order seems like the obvious answer, but i wanted to break it down some more, so i first separated between 'normal' electronic music & the more 'free' stuff (abstract electronics, noise, free jazz, etc.) however, this wouldn't always do: where do i put those sonic youth & white noise records? so i needed a 'rock' section & while i'm at it i figured i'd break it down into even more categories: this was even more disastrous! chris watson's cd of wildlife recordings couldn't be 'drum n bass', 'idm', 'abstract electronics', 'heavy/noise' or 'jazz', much less 'rock' or 'pop electronics'. & of course i didn't want a 'miscellaneous' section because i'm a prick like that. nobody ever browses the miscellaneous section! my latest idea was to break them down by country. no questions about whether one cd befits a certain pile or not, & it was actually interesting to make comparisons between the american, canadian, english & german outputs. packaging-wise, europe beats north america hands down, although the few really nice-looking american covers are always especially nice (lucky kitchen for one...) i'm aware that this thread may be awarded a prize for utter futility if it ever takes off, but i'm seriously interested in hearing any creative stunts you guys & gals may have pulled off to overcome this, er, problem. ~ david

I have heaps. The top of the heap is most recently listened to. Sometimes, I'll turn over the heap and start listening to the the ones that sifted to the bottom. Vinyl record -- once you have a wife, job, and kids, and 3000 records, you will never have time to actually sort them out. Again most-recently-listened to are in stacks on the floor, mixed in with whatever I've most recently purchased from the Goodwill. So there will be Thomas Brinkmann nestled up against Latin Dance Instruction records. Perfectly logical.

No, you should do them by weight: start off with single CDs in paper slipcases, then work your way up to the 4 CD double-jewelcases. Round them off to tenth of a gram increments, and in instances where they weigh the same, *THEN* you go alphabetical by the name of the engineer who mastered them. e Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-1156 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Fort Worth, Texas

this might seem a bit weird but i put my cds in "rainbow" order. 1. because it looks cool, and 2. i tend to remember the color of the cd (on its side with the title, etc..) along with the artist, so when im looking for a particular cd i can just look in the red section or blue or whatever... (kinda weird, i know...) as for my records i have them sorted either by label or by artist... depending on which i have more of... i have my cds filed by label. within that i have them filed as they were released. my records are file by label as well: schematic then choco ind, then isophlux, then skam, then mas, then clear, then rephlex, then losse single that don't pair up with others. of course they are not filed from favorite to least favorite. i also keep a database of my whole collection. these are divided up between cd and vinyl... all in alphabetical order.

With over 9000 vinyl records the only way to do it is by continent/country, mine is: UK Europe Detroit Rest of America And then _very_ roughly by genre. Its the only way. ----- Original Message ----- From: david turgeon <david@evolutiontech.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, October 27, 1999 7:02 PM Subject: (idm) classify!

Classification of collection(s), various methods I've actually seen: 1. Random ( an I ching approach to a library ). This was on a 2-3000 piece colection of vinyl. I plundered it closely....no order at all that I could see. 2. By spine color ( this was a 10,000 + ) vinyl collection. 3. By predominant instrument(s) played ( a jazz collector friend...this kinda makes sense in a jazz collection. ) 4. A guy I knew arranged his records into piles: "new arrivals" and " to sell" As Poison Idea ( 80's American Hardcore Punk band ) penned, " Record collectors are pretentious assholes" np: Azad ( new Muslimgauze ). I am enough of a fan to always pick the new M-gauze stuff. I'm enough of a critic to get rid of 1/2 of it. This is a keeper. There's only 1,000 and each of the 1,000 CD covers is unique . Idm list friendly... Also : if you dig This Heat, Can, Fela Kuti, Miles ( 70's era ) Davis, Liquid Liquid, African, and dub....*do* check out the new double LP on Leaf, " Last Light" by Eardrum. Not idm, but groovy as fuck. pps: any digesters here having problems? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
