The majority (if not all) of the art direction for Warp is done by The Designers Republic, and I too was pleased with what they put together for the compilation (I only have picked up 10+3 so far). Supposedly there is a retrospective book being released on TDR sometime in the near future. Last I checked a couple months ago, the scheduled date was for September. Any news on this? I might add that the Labradford remix of LFO possibly wins for the most unlistenable song in my entire CD collection (that high frequency...ouch!).

First one must explore the agonizing limits of patterns, their octahedral vultures and box-shaped emotions. At each stage, patterns and non-patterns are grafted atop and within the gray matter of one's mind. The Vibert mix was one of my favorite tracks off the comp (along with the remixes Plaid, Autechre, Four Tet, and John McEntire did....) so I guess different strokes for different folks. At 11:01 PM 10/19/99 EDT, Magicnerd8@aol.com wrote:

anyday. What about that Big Loada remix?? I haven't heard anything by Oval before, and I'm not sure I want to now! To me this is a little over that boundary between music and noise. Eddie

Markus Popp (Oval) isn't so much about music as he is, to paraphrase his own description, about the "workflow" of a particular musical situation. In this case, he was given SP's "Big Loada," and set to work manipulating it within the context of certain software paradigms, or to paraphrase him again, metaphors. Thus, Oval's output isn't necessarily going to be a reflection of a musically-inclined aesthetic ideal or goal, but more of a situation in which the means justify the ends. I've never seen him live, but I get the sense that would be instrumental in making "sense" of Oval's output. This, however, is not a justification for the pain that track causes...nor is it to warn you off to his previous material. I think Systemisch and Szenario work very well and I enjoy them quite a bit. laz Eddie Symons wrote:

I think he was probably actually playing CDs on stage. He performed a track off "diskont94" and i think a lot of the newer stuff on "szenariodisk" (i hadn't gotten it yet) plus the remix of Pizzicato 5 as his finale. It sounded similar but takes on a different context when performed at such volume. Incidentally the P5 remix is much more in tune with what he was doing with "dok", so I wonder if the Squarepusher remix is a sign of what's to come from his new software explorations.
