First, a small one, I went to see and hear Farmer's manual last evening. In a short sentence, it was horribly interresting ... At leat there was some Visual to display on the screen ( see below ) and even if the equipment mis-functionned at some point ( or was it a fake breakdown ? ) it was fun to watch and quite hypnotic. Does anyone know what software they used ? Friday night's Chain Reaction was cool, but I have a bit of a mix feeling about it. I arrives at around 21:40, and looked like Monolake was already playing for some time, I thing I head him for about 40 minutes, but it was very nice, could recognize pieces from Interstate and from "Hong Kong", but his show was a bit "nonchalant" ( in french ) seems like he was having problem... when he finished his set, the system kept playing, and he had to run up and close everything. After a small pause, two guys came up and started spining, I assume it was DJ rene and DJ pete ( Substance and Vainqueur ), one of then was actually spinning and adding effects, while the other one picked the vinyls ( and sometime played with the effects ). They played a varied mix of hard Chain Reaction type music, some deep Dub, sounded like some jammin'Unit mixed in with Maurizio and some funky groovy latino bits and pieces ( not long but was fun ). I left at around 1:30AM, and did Scion Played ? before Monolake or after I left ? The visual sucked, they sucked big time, I don't know who was in charge, but they sucked, they had about 4 different types of projection on the screen and they were ordinary; moving circles squares and line, ... Max. P.S. Anyone went to see/hear Scanner Saturday ? any comments ?

Hypnotic is quite a good word to define the performance, I really liked it, too bad I had to be at work early this morning, I left when they took a break around 12:00am ( they started a 9pm and I think they were scheduled to play until 3am ) I'm pretty sure it was jMax ( the Java interfaced Max version for Linux/SGI/etc... ). Now, I got to reinstall Linux on my home PC ;)

Well, one thing for sure the crowd sucked! Quite a bit too much of "I must be seen here" people talking and not giving a damn during Monolake set. The only bad thing about the set was that it was too short and not loud enough ( or it was too much people talking ). Got the chance to chat a bit with Robert Henke, a really nice guy.

If they played it was after you left, I left around the same time but I was there at 21:00.

I enjoyed Farmers Manual's performance a lot... Just got into their music and I quite like it... As for the software they use: I know that on the audio side, they heavily rely on pd (pure data) by Miller Puckette. They probably use GEM (Graphics Environment for Multimedia), a pd externals package that uses OpenGL, for their visuals (among other things, of course). I also caught a glimpse of b1257+12, which is another wacky sound app. BTW, did you stay for the whole performance? I had to leave at 1:30 and I wonder if I missed a lot of the sonic assault... i listened to the same farmers manual show last nite via real audio. it was very interesting. their set sounded like herds of people slogging through a vast snowfield or glacial melting or the sound of what styrofoam looks like. all in all, very nice and abstract. i think i was also able to see some of the visuals along with the live webcast and i also thought that they were pretty bad. didnt compliment the music too well. it seems that everytime i see visuals with someones set, they just dont work or arent that good. later, greg davis autumn records www.amug.org/~jkdavis/autumn np: nobukazu takemura-meteor

anyone care to shed light on what this might be? i'm faced with the option of doing a linux partition and would be interested in knowing any thoughts on Max. i've been hearing about it quite a lot, but never have i seen it explained as to what it is and what does it do.
