alright folks, here's my review of the show at Crystalballroom, Portland, Or.
10-14-99.
The day just felt right for me to try to scam my way into a concert. After
talking to the bouncer, three guys, alot of he said, she said, "I was suppose
to be on the list", and one tour manager I got in for free. "woo hoo" so onto
the show.
Starting it off was DJ Die with a set of dnb, jungle with dynamite mc doing
his thing. For some reason dj die's set consisted of faint sounds of no
u-turn style dnb with an added distortion. It was nice to see the dj that
I've heard from the old universe tapes. "I feel like hiding, I don't know
why, must be the sounds of dj die."
Then with a quick transition on came Breakbeat Era (EEEra, for those uk
folks). Not hearing of this band prior I came in with some mix'd idea of what
they sounded like. So on with it already, not bad stuff, but then again
nothing that really caught me as being good. I do have to stress though the
drummer was excellent, I've never seen a drummer nearly as good.
Roni Size, his set was diffen. fun for those dnb people. I just don't see
where dnb is going at the moment with the constant use of the same breaks.
Anyway, he was fun to listen while I sip'd on a cold one.
DJ Shadow, ( I have to say I saw Shadow on tour about a year ago and it was
the worst show I've seen) Shadow comes out and he just started mix'n stuff up
so great I was surprised this was the same guy. His set up had two 1200's and
a vestex mix along with what looked like some cd mixer on the side. Let me
just say if you have a chance to see this show go for it, Shadow alone is
worth it. He did a live rendetion of something off Endtroducing(can't
remember the name asides it's the one with the clock on the wall reads a
quarter past midnight).
To top it off Shadow and Cut Chemist come out and do a dual thing only
using 7"'s.!!
I'm not going to go on, let me just say it was a fun experience seeing this
show.
