First of all, the constant barrage of complaints concerning lack of innovation on the part of this or that artist has gotten tiresome for the Nth time with me, and I'm sure a few others. Has anybody on this list invented any new forms of music lately? No. So hush already. Second, if people can talk for days on end about supposedly relevant post-rock bands that wouldn't know a funky beat if it gave them VD, then the rest of us can chat about ZZ Top. At least it's danceable, for Pete's sake. Third, Bowie may cop style from others, and Earthling may have been poo to a lot of ears out there, but he still makes an average of two or three keepers an album which is more than a great deal of our favorite artists do. If copping style from others is such a sin, then you've got a lot of work ahead of you- one hundred years of The Blues is lying out there waiting to be denounced as uninnovative copycat trash. Fourth and lastly, to whoever dissed the Rolling Stones- well, you can't always get what you want. My $0.02 about the whole 9, re: recent 411. I downloaded the MP3 of the ZZ Top song in question ("Dreadmonboogaloo.mp3 ", thanks, BaPh...). It SAMPLES Autechre, no question in my mind. This is a bit different than the 'biting' mentioned earlier. Last time I checked, Billy Gibbons still had 3 Rolexes; Sean and Rob have none. A year or two ago, Like A Tim covered ZZTop's "Legs" ..with the vocals by the DMX Crew female vocalist... it is pretty much a straight cover of the song with synths thru distortion pedals acting as the guitars. It mixes pretty well with digitalish electro that has that moroder pulse-16th note action... I've seen a friend (Pasta) mix ZZTop at a party (Legs or maybe Thug) and all the post rockers finally started dancing when the electro and Michael Jackson hadn't gotten them up.... ZZtop has been into superficial synthyness for quite a long time. Do you remember their cover of Viva Las Vegas? (Elvis made it famous) it is hard to spot the guitars at all in that one... I'd say that ZZTop is pretty clever at hybridizing some pop music stuffin the 80's and anyone who thinks they are just doing blues-rock doesn't have their ears on. Not that I think ZZTop have done anything remarkable, but if you are trying to explain an arpeggiator to a Hells Angel one day, just remember "Legs"...
