low are a great band. in fact, secret name is in my CD player right now. a beautiful record. one of the best shows i went to this year was low. if you can go see them where the audience will be quiet, it is great. that low remix CD: thats another story. i read an interview somewhere that low had nothing to do with that CD. it was basically an obligation because they still had one release in their contract with caroline. they said if it were up to them, they would have gotten other people to do remixes (i.e. jim orourke or john mcentire, etc.). so that project was something that didnt really approve of or were involved with. although i havent heard it so i dont know how it worked. heres a direct connection to IDM: low is on kranky. labradford is also on kranky who just lent a remix for the warp 10th anniv remixes CD's. how about that?? :) later, greg davis autumn records www.amug.org/~jkdavis/autumn

Low are a perfect study in clean production, understatement and just fucking rule. Yes, there are other music(s) spoken of here from time to time on the idm list. Will Samuels also posts *plenty* on this list and is always knowledgeable and cool headed. His veering into the post rock end is welcome by me and I'm sure, plenty of listers. He's intelligent, maybe he dances (!) and he is a music lover: idm I'll also recommend Kranky as a label. The Low remixes CD was a start to what could be a great continuing series. Imagine if Kranky were to get further into the elctronic realm. Dream....... Variety is the spice of life, enjoy your meal. Peter np: Gruntsplatter/ Slowvent split ok ok ok....more idm relevant. I went to SF last week and made the inevitable trip to the legendary Amoeba. I saw a few things that I thought maybe I could get some tips on. This is not a joke..... 1. a Throbbing Gristle "covers" CD, as RAP songs?!!!!!!!!!!!??????? seriously...on Record Label records????!!!! 2. The same , but for Coil?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????? 3. I was told last week that several groups in the black metal scene were getting into *digital black metal* which incorporates the usual grind with dsp and digital wreckery. But who are the artists? No, I'm not looking for an ethics in music flame; I really want to know! ++ Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 13:44:21 PDT From: "Matt Wright" <mcwright@lclark.edu> Subject: Re: (idm) LOW will be performing live on KUCI 88.9FM

Woohoo. Rock n roll. I take it from some of the messages flying through here that there are quite a few post-rock fans? That's cool. It's just that this is the IDM list. So the band Low and the Kranky label shouldn't be unfamiliar to most on IDM ++

Didn't see any of the things you mentioned but I did make it to Amoeba last week and reached previously unexplored levels of spending in a single shop. Anywhere that has an Atom Heart *section*...good lord. Low played a half-hour set there, which I really enjoyed. Er, anyway.

I liked one or two of the Neotropic mixes and that was about it. This remix project didn't come out as nicely as the remixes done for Bowery Electric. If Kranky artists would have remixed Low that would have been cool. When Low was down at the station they seemed to really dislike the remixes.

actually i remember chris (zimbo to some of you) bought some 7" that was a Low side-project. I believe that it was all electronic. Chris...any comments? Not to mention Warp picked up artists such as Stereolab and Broadcast. Low and other Kranky artists are in the same vein. While on the Kranky tip, has anyone heard if there are going to be any other releases from Pan American? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? its the hospital people 7" when i was in search of pop, i forgot to mention this as one of the things that has returned me to an electronic pop kick. it is wonderful. wonderful. so much better than the silly remixes. chris. music for lunchpails . wednesdays 6-9pm . kuci 88.9fm . www.kuci.org "There is no way a beautiful woman can live up to what she looks like for any appreciable length of time." - Kilgore Trout

For my part, I bought the disc solely for the 12+ minute Porter Ricks mix. Then again, I'm a sucker for Porter Ricks, and the idea behind the track (taking an indie rock/shoegazer track & running it through the PR filter) was just too good to pass up. Bill

i have to throw in my opinion here. i contribute about as often as a full solar eclipse so this is special. i highly recommend low's 'secret name' disc. it's in my player next to the bed & perfect for a blissful night's sleep. can't go wrong with this one. ----- Original Message ----- From: laerm <laerm@voicenet.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, October 05, 1999 8:27 PM Subject: Re: (idm) low
