i picked up a copy of black dog's "bytes" yesterday (3 bucks at the local used cd store - score for me, baby!) and was happily surprised to find that it kicks ass. sounds pretty much like "proto-plaid" which i guess is to be expected. can anyone recommend something else by them? how does "spanners" compare? input appreciated. thanks, nub

Nice score. Bytes is classic idm. If you're into that then look for Temple of Transparent Balls. It has that same quirky funky feel. Spenners didn't do much for me. Kevin http://www.beatseek.com On Sun, Sep 26, 1999 at 06:28:54PM -0600, Nub wrote:

The Handley/Turner/Downie Black Dog line-up released two albums on Warp ("Bytes" and "Spanners") and two albums on GPR ("Temple of Transparent Balls" and "Parallel"). I prefer the Warp stuff myself. "Parallel" is basically a collection of the early EPs. "Temple of Transparent Balls" has some really nice moments on it, although it's not as consistent as the Warp albums. "Bytes" and "Spanners" have a lot in common, although whereas the former is perhaps a bit more playful and organic, the latter is a lot more polished and textured. I'd rate "Spanners" and "Bytes" pretty much equally, although if I were forced to just take one of them on a desert island, it'd be "Spanners". Downie recorded Black Dog's "Music for Adverts (and Short Films)" once Handley & Turner had left. It's a nice little collage of exotic sounds, loops and weirdness, but for me personally it highlighted the fact that I actually prefer the Plaid style. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/

Spanners is even better. Some may say it's even better than Plaid, several tracks are really brilliant. Unfortunately other Black Dog releases are not as good as these two albums IMO. Their third album on Warp, "Music For Adverts" also has some nice tracks, but they are too short to make the whole album sound interesting. Nick.

Spanners is a bit weird in that although it's one of my favourite albums as a whole, I found there are no real stand-out tracks for me. So when I came to make up my "Best of Black Dog/Plaid" compilation I was hard-pressed to include anything from it. Here's what I have chosen so far from what I have As One - Reflections on Reflections - 01 - Shambala (reflected by Balil) Black Dog - Peel Session - 01 - Shadehead Black Dog - Temple Of Transparent Balls - 07 - Sharp Shooting On Saturn Plaid - Rest Proof Clockwork - 07 - Gellab Black Dog - Black Dog Productions ep - 02 - Atypic - Otaku Balil - Parasight - 01 - Rosery Pilots Plaid - Undoneson EP - 01 - Undoneson Plaid - Rest Proof Clockwork - 09 - Dang Spot Black Dog - Black Dog Productions ep - 01 - Balil - Flux Balil - Parasight - 03 - Parasight Black Dog - Parallel - 10 - VIR2L Black Dog - Bytes - 11 - Balil - ¾ Heart Black Dog - Parallel - 06 - Vanttool Plaid - Undoneson EP - 02 - Spudink Black Dog - Spanners - 11 - Nommo Black Dog - Temple Of Transparent Balls - 02 - Cost II Reload - Auto Reload EP (Volume 2) - 02 - Le Soleil et La Mer (Black Dog Productions Remix) I've managed to get it down to about 1' 48" so hopefully it will squeeze onto 2 cdrs. Any suggestions about what I should include or omit? d0ktor -----Original Message----- From: Nick Zavriev <ambi@mu.ru> To: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: Tuesday, September 28, 1999 11:13 PM Subject: Re: (idm) black dog recs?

Omitting something is really difficult since there is so much good quality material but I'd have to include something from the "Mind Over Rhythm Meet the Men from Plaid" album. Definately one of my favorites.
1999-09-30 12:50Ross BalmerOh, I bought that the other day but I haven't listened to it yet. Thanks for reminding me.

Hmm, I will have to think about this. The fact is that I own all of this music myself and I'm just copying stuff which I have paid for into a track order of my own choosing. I'm a bit reluctant to send out copies. However, I suppose I can assume that list members are likely to have much of this material themselves as I do. I would like to hear some opinions about this, especially as there is a thread called "home taping is killing music" going on. My own position has always been that if I can pay, I will, but if I cannot get the music any other way I am prepared to copy it. I have a copy of Twoism which I got from BleepBloop for example (does anyone have a better quality recording BTW?) but I would still buy it, probably at great expense, if I could find one. I *could* send out some copies if people were prepared to cover the cost of the cd-rs and postage. Other than that, if anyone has a better recording of Twoism, or cd-rs/mp3s of other hard to find things such as the Age of Slack ep or the Boards of Canada remix of Michael Fakesch - Surfaise, I would like these very much. I would like it to be known though, that if I could find these things to buy, I would, even if I already had a copy, for the sake of my collection. d0ktor. -----Original Message----- From: Magicnerd8@aol.com <Magicnerd8@aol.com> To: ross@tuimedia.co.uk <ross@tuimedia.co.uk> Date: Thursday, September 30, 1999 1:25 AM Subject: Re: (idm) black dog recs?
