I *love* Laika!! Fucking complex and groovy music, really. One of the few bands that can deploy lots of odd time signatures in a way that still gets your foot tapping or your head nodding or your neurons firing or whatever you do. Four 7/8 tracks on their last album, all of which don't feel the least bit odd. Their songs combine sophisticated and rich beat textures, lots of vibes (or samples of vibes) and flutes, kinda sounding like a latin jazz ensemble with a sythesizer section. Sound effects and Margaret Feidler's (is that her name?) vocals evoke Massive Attack style Trip Hop, but the groove is more brazil than bronx. Also, they represent probably the best translation of studio-music-to-live-show I've ever seen. They toured with Tricky in 93 or 94... blew him away with their at least 8 peice band on stage. Brilliant! Are they playing the US anytime soon? Either you know something I don't, or you're thinking of Like Weather by Leila. (?) Rephlex, male and female vocals, erm, beginning with L? Its a great album - a must for anyone who likes funky stuff, plus for an entirely bedroom recorded album its amazingly slick. I think she's got some new stuff coming out on XL or something. Jorkens np: Spiritualised: Come Together, Two Lone Swordsmen mix - 15 quid and worth every penny

My mistake; I was discussing Leila's Like Weather CD on Rephlex. I know of no Laika on Rephlex. There is a really pretty Laika song on the Macro Dub Infection 2cd comp from a few years ago. The comp is pretty varied, with some Jamaica-style dub, plus some songs I liked from Skull, Wagon Christ, Tortoise, Bedouin Ascent, and I noticed it made Spin's list of important 90's records recently.
