Hey there -- I'm wondering if there are any Londoners on this list. I've just recently moved there and would like some info as to good record shops, clubs, etc. I keep on encountering bad house & garage wherever I go. =( I did find something interesting, however. There's a three-day 'thing' at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) called 'Adventures in German Electronica' -- I went tonight, saw a German group called 'To Roccoco Rot' (it's almost a palindrome). Anyone heard of them? They were rather interesting -- sorta like Autechre ran over Love & Rockets on an 8-track. I'd never heard them before, but I reckon it'd sound better at a bigger venue or dancing at a club. Needless to say, being at the ICA, the music felt like more of an exposition rather than an actual show. Their 'opening act' Dee (I hope I'm spelling this right) spun an hour+ set of ambience. It was interesting, the arresting artifice of it all, but I have to admit I was falling asleep at the end of his set. Like I said, I imagine it would have been more interesting without the sedate art gallery vibe. Okay, that's enough of my bleary rambling. Thanks for any help any of you Londoners could throw my way. -mak ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Hi, I was living in London for the past four or so months, so here's a few suggestions: Look out for Sprawl nights, Thursdays at Global Cafe. I can't remember the name of the square it's on, but easy to track down. They have interesting stuff going down, generally DJ sets. One of the two residents is si-cut db (bugger the punctuation, if you've heard his recordings). Anyway, a good mix of fairly current electronics from the residents, it's only 3 quid from memory, and free net access all night long. :) Possibly pushing things re: IDM connection, but I also really enjoyed Monday nights at Bar Rumba (That's How It Is, hosted by Giles Peterson and Ben Watson). Damn eclectic from a more soul and funk filled angle. Most importantly, eclectic with the emphasis on "I want you to get down" rather than "Let me show you how much I know". Re: record stores, there's lots of interesting places on Berwick St, in Soho, or right near there. Atlas, Sounds of the Universe (both very slim on CDs if you're into those), Sister Ray, Ambient Soho (also home of the label Worm Interface), and even Selectadisk (diverse range from pop through to heaps of vinyl of all sorts, good on post-rock stuff and more dancey/hip-hoppy stuff).

Yeah, I would've thought they'd be getting lots of comments on here. I love them, even if I wouldn't say I love all their stuff. When they hit the spot, they blow me away. I also saw them live in London, with support from Fridge. Both came across well live.

I'm sure that'll be just "D", who is a guy who works in Rough Trade records (also very worth a look, in Neal's Yard, Covent Gardens, below City Skate). He runs (?) a label called Soul Static Sound whose output I highly recommend for those into mix ups of "band stuff" and "electronic stuff". To Rococo Rot and he collaborated on an ep called just "trrd", which I rate enormously. As far as record shops go, you've already had the core advice: Berwick Street (Sister Ray, Selectadisc, Ambient Soho/Worm Interface, Reckless [for secondhand]), Rough Trade (Covent Garden & off Portobello Road, though the latter shop is more poorly organised than the former). I quail to think of the amount of cash I've injected into those shops... There are also the secondhand shops in Notting Hill, though they're somewhat expensive (£13 for a 2ndhand copy of a new non-rare release, but they drop the price every so often) -- you can find some good stuff, but it's not as good as Reckless. They also have a branch on Berwick Street. It's been aaaaages since I've been clubbing, but the Old Street/Hoxton area is pretty good (many good pre-club bars, plus the 333 Club, with the Scala and Turnmills nearby). I can make more specific recommendations via offlist email. HTH. -- Richard
