If I were stranded on a desert isle with a solar-powered discman and could take ONLY CDs of German 70's prog-rock bands, which top 2 or 3 titles from the following bands would I have to take with me to survive? Can, Neu, Cluster,Harmonia (and anything else I havent thought of) Thanks! ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-1156 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Fort Worth, Texas

can - _future days_ can - _soon over babaluma_ can - _tago mago_ neu! - _NEU! 75_ neu! - _neu 1_ harmonia - _harmonia deluxe_ cluster - _cluster_ cluster - _sowieso_ cluster and eno - _after the heat_ la duesseldorf - _la duesseldorf_ amon duul ii - _yeti_ faust - _faust_ faust - _the faust tapes_ 13 discs covers all of krautrock pretty well (assuming you already know kraftwerk, which i'd imagine would be a fairly safe assumption for the general membership of this list). helps you decide what to get into then on, too. i'm the wrong guy to ask about tangerine dream, perhaps the only other rather important band that could be lumped in here. the only TDream i ever liked was about 45 seconds of _force majeure_, so... (and on a related note, the '94 faust tour of the states still ranks in my head as the craziest...err, spectacle i've ever seen.) * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# i'm only happy when it's complicated icq:5562209

Try these to start: Can's _Future Days_, _Tago Mago_, _Ege Bamyasi_ Cluster's _Cluster 71_, _Cluster II_ Kraftwerk's _Kraftwerk_ (the one with the red and white road cone on the cover) Organisation's _Tone Float_ (early incarnation of Kraftwerk) Neu!'s _Neu!_ and _Neu! 75_ Harmonia's _Deluxe_ and _Musik Von Harmonia_ Brainticket's _Cottonwoodhill_ (actually a Swiss group, but often classified as krautrock) anything by Cosmic Jokers Ash Ra Tempel's _Seven Up_, _Schwingungen_ Faust's _Faust Tapes_, _IV_, _So Far_ Popol Vuh's _Affenstunde_, _In Den Garten Pharaohs_ Annexus Quam's _Osmose_ Conrad Schnitzler's _Ballet Statique_ Et Cetera's _Et Cetera_ (perhaps the best of the lot, but I'm not sure if it's available on CD and it's ultra-rare. Anyone want to sell/trade me a copy?) Dave Segal Managing Editor/Alternative Press Reviews/BPM/Reissue Redux/Origins Of Cool Secret Ions on WCSB Thursdays 9-11PM EST www.wcsb.org

This may not carry much weight with some of you, but Tom Jenkinson said in an interview with me that he really respects Yes bassist Chris Squire. Yes did create some pretty impressive music scattered throughout their many albums. I swear that one track on _Fragile_ anticipates Tortoise's signature early sound.... Dave said it well "...scattered...you can find...". Bill Bruford is simply an amazing drummer - I don't care what you think of the band. And Squire was a very good bass player as well. On the whole, I can only deal with parts of certain songs before I need to leave the room. And those are usually the parts in which Jon Anderson does NOT do anything. Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there. Right. jeff Dave Segal wrote:

All depends on how many chemicals you have imbibed :-) Fragile was *amazing* at the time. Roundabout used to have me breathless. Yes... I AM old, I know, but I am still glad to have had this as part of my formative musical education. I realize this has drifted somewhat off-topic. Sorry! German prog- rock? Try the Faust tapes. I *
