While doing a junk shop trawl, I bought a Haruomi Hosono album titled Mental Sports Mixes (most notably featuring an Orb production, also Graham Massey, Bomb the Bass etc). from '94 on TriStar / Epic. What can you tell me about Hosono? Is he a former Yellow Magicker? I'm just going through it for the first time now and am enjoying it. Is he still around? The inlay says at the very bottom "Dedicated to Haruomi "Medicine Man" Hosono, Gaia, Space, Outlands & Friends." Also picked up an Eye Q double from '96: Five Years of Eye Q Music with all their usual range of suspects featured: Who wanted Virtual Symmetry a while ago? Here's a track (See You) - also Alter Ego, Sven Vath, Pascal FEOS, Cygnus X, Hildenbeutel etc. Somehow, I don't think I'll ever play it, but I couldn't leave it there amongst all the dusty NonStopRavePartyHits93... ah, you know how it goes. Bassist and producer extroardinaire. Ex-YMO, ambienteer and my fave of the lot. Did very cool synth pop using samples (way ahead of the pack) in the early 80s (Philharmony, SFX and the other Friends Of Earth projects)...made some very cool and classic ambient after that (Mercuric Dance is amazing). Produced and guested on some cool Japanese pop (Sandii & the Sunsetz). Mental Sports mixes is very nice...Quiet Lodge, Good Sport and the Medicine thingy are good as well. He also did NDE with Bill Laswell and is the "H" in HAT (Hosono, Atom Heart, Tetsu Inoue). Until relatively lately, he was the driving force behind Daisyworld records (on which can be found Mixmaster Morrris/Jonah Sharpe's "Quiet Logic", among others) but it seems to have run afoul. He also put out his "country ambient" lp "Country Gazette (with the guy from Sukia, I believe)" a few years back. His Swing Slow material is a bit harder to find...and is a different animal. I consider Philharmony, SFX, Mercuric Dance and selsctions from the Medicine/Lodge/Sports things essential - all for different reasons. YMO's 1993 reunion lp, Technodon is also one of my all time hits. Personally I wouldn't delve farther back into Haruomi's (solo) past beyond Philharmony, but there are some really great things from that point onward. I know he's been involved knob twiddling for Something Wonderful and I have a single he did not too long ago with Ken Ishi on order, but it's not arrived yet. jeff Irene McC wrote:
