Some of these are old but whatever. I acquired them all recently. Swell: Surgeon - Force and Form (tresor) Less bangy, more tribal and textured. Like giant pistons sorta. Clubby techno turned on its head. Fantastic. Way better than Balance (which I liked). If his records improve/get more unique at the rate they have been, in 2 albums he'll produce the second coming. fx randomiz - goflex (a-musik) I like it even more than Mouse on Mars - Instrumentals (well, except for Chromantic). Crunchier, tons of really odd noises, but still really playful and great. cristian vogel - specific momentific (mille plateaux) Like anthony child, vogel makes 4/4 techno that doesn't sound like anyone else. Hypnotic and dark (sometimes)... really odd. Not as good as some 12" tracks I've heard but really great on the overall. various - microscopic sound (caipirinha) all the usual beep/click/beep/click etc suspects (except pansonic... which i don't really understand). really, really odd (even if you listen to a couple of the people who appear). really, really good. the goem track is my fave, along with the digital one. some of the bass has to be heard to be believed - you can feel it more than you can hear it. trance inducing. black lung - uncomfortable questions for comfortable people (helix) really dark techno with a lot of BANG. Beepy. A few dronier bits ("the hive"). I'm pretty damn fond of it. Various Artists - 8,8.5,9 (fat cat) Not the remix one (not sure if I got the numbers right). Finally bought this, and it blows every other CR/BC record I've heard right out of the water. F'ing incredible. Especially 8. So different... so not normal... soooo nice. crashing waves of thick, reverbed textures that repeat in a very subtle and very missable way. friend who doesn't like much beyond whitney houston/shania twain/cher house remixes thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever heard. Third Eye Foundation - You Guys Kill Me (merge) Ok so I had this a while ago and then I lost it and I got a new one. It's absolutely mindshatteringly brilliant. His best ever (though not by much). Sorta swell but sorta not: Kit Clayton - repetition and nonsense (drop beat) total chain reaction/basic channel ripoff that isn't as good as the originals by a long shot but isn't too too bad. The first track sounds like the various artists 12" but not 1/10th as good. Unswell: That dumb new u-ziq record that is boring as hell. Same old same old... that awful carl craig innerzone orchestra record which is, well, awful. Really, really offensively awful. that lamb record with that annoying girl singing over what would otherwise be good tracks. ick. the new air record premiers symptomes which is lacking everything that made the first one so good. the last track is harder edged and funkier and a little better, but the rest is worthless. almost as bad as that comp of other source recording artists. Does anyone know who max kahlen is? I bought a 12" by him for a couple bucks on a whim. had a sticker talking about thomas brinkmann supported labels etc. haven't listened yet tho. --- the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto

You know I thought the same thing when I first got it. I was like, what the hell is this? I had the innerzone orchestra remixes of bug in the bass bin (which were fantastic) but the album did not sound like those. Programmed is a difficult album to listen to. There isn't any messed up dsp effects or odd programming; it is just difficult. So the other day I finally sat down with it and played it out on my home stereo (instead of in my car). And I found myself liking it. In the end, the album is an enigma. It is jazz, it is techno, it is something else. But now it works for me. A difficult album with normal sounds. Lastly, the album had a lot of hype. I don't think it lives up to that but it is a nice attempt to fuse different genres. in short it is a grower... your mileage may (and will) vary... -daniel: Head Monkey: Mad Monkey Records: http://monkey.eliteware.com

I think that was part of my initial problem. I expected a groove. It is Carl Craig and because of that you expect techno. It isn't that. A very bold move on his part. I think it will get the same criticisms, likes and dislikes that Tom Jenkinson gets on his "jazz" projects -daniel: Head Monkey: Mad Monkey Records: http://monkey.eliteware.com

you mean 'source lab'? depends which volume you're talking about. the first one was nice (though it must sound terribly dated now) & the air track on it is probably the only thing they've done i can more or less bear with ('sexy boy' is downright heinous). as for volume two & three, they're quite forgettable although there's some (rare) interesting moments on three. apart from dj cam ('mad blunted jazz' especially), french electronic music is rarely good. -- david

(paradox intended) France is a nation of many millions of people, certainly there is some good electronic music being made there. I, for one, find Funky Derrick's "Boogie Dawn" to be a righteous kickin' house album (he's French). I won't even discuss MC Solaar. I do find it slightly odd how the dude at Other Music asked me if I was into "French stuff" like it was some huge trend in trip-hoppy electronica dug by throngs of soundboys. I guess some people like to buy into the "French Wave" concept...maybe your comment comes from being burned out on that hype. - Fred Church http://www.thelocus.com/kumquat

fortunately, they're also entirely subjective. (i also said 'rarely', not 'never'.)

i don't like mc solaar although i'll acknowledge that he's done a lot for french hip-hop (i.e. he practically invented it). however, perhaps a bit because of this influence, i find most french hip-hop to be way too tame, even the 'gangsta' stuff that has picked up recently & that's even more funny to look at than wu tang can ever hope to be.

after daft punk & air, as well as a slew of french music during my youth, my opinion is that france seems to have a hard time producing decent &/or innovative music. if anyone disagrees, thank god. -- david

Well, dunno if I disagree, having not heard much, but there's always Tone Rec on Sub Rosa (hope I got the right one), and when I was in Paris in July I heard a local comp of noisy ambient and minimal clicky freak shit. You could say it was all derivative of Mego etc, I guess, if you were feeling particularly dismissive, but, well, it at least showed some variety of stuff getting released. Michael np.
