It will definitely be on my tops list of 99. i was really surprised by the jazzy & post-rock flavor many mixes on this release. i would never have thought to have pram, isan, four tet, winston & ross, john mcentire, stereolab, mogwai, ellis island sound, labradford, andy votel, wunder, plone, jim o'rourke, oval and spiritualized as featured Warp remixers. for the most part this release is definitely not in the standard idm style - which is what makes it so good IMHO.

If nothing else, this Warp 10 comp will give those who missed it a chance to hear Spiritualized's remix of LFO's "Tied Up." If there's a heaven, and if I'm destined to go there, then this is the track I want to hear as I ascend to my eternal reward. Plus, Oval remixing Squarepusher? Such an absurd idea that it's got to be amazing (or at least an interesting failure). Actually, the Warp 10 things that have got me excited are the other two. The thing is, most people who write or talk about music assume that everyone else has the same reference points as they do. And since most magazine writers (esp. in larger publications) seem to be about ten years older than me, a lot of it's lost on me. Let me come clean: I have never heard Voodoo Ray, The Message or Terminator. I do not own any Artificial Intelligences, Can records or Early Detroit stuff. I'm trying to rectify this, but I'm on a tight budget, plus most pivotal moments of techno are on limited to 15 copies deleted 12", so I don't have a worm in hell's chance of finding them. Maybe its my own fault, or the fault of everyone for being so backward looking. I dont know. Anyhow, I think there are probably a lot of people in the same boat, and it'll get worse as time goes on. Any help, condolences or abuse...?

Me too, with some reservations. I hope the "Early Warp Tracks" one isn't just a rehash of Pioneers of the Hypnotic Groove. In any case, it better have lots of Sweet Exorcist on it. (None of their early singles were released on CD, unlike LFO, Tricky Disco, Nightmares on Wax, etc.)

The Artificial Intelligence series in general isn't all it's cracked up to be. The first compilation is great, BDP's Bytes is excellent, Surfing on Sine Waves is a good example of why people got excited about Aphex in the first place, Electro-Soma is very good, and the rest is all pretty much dated. See http://www.hyperreal.org/music/lists/idm/archives/idm.9808 for my review of the second AI compilation.

Most of the crucial Detroit stuff is actually very much in print; see www.submerge.com for details. As for your limited budget, just quit wasting money on Lexaunculpt and Funkstorung and all these other clowns who will never make a record one million billionth as great as Ege Bamyasi or Future Days (just to name a couple of Can records). yes!!!!! it's fun to be jaded about new music! being condescending to newbies is bliss! they'll never be as good, that's for sure! they weren't there when i was a teenager & music meant _everything_ to me & i just so happened to stumble on those can records nobody wanted!! ah, if it were all now like it was then!!!! why are they even trying?!?! they'll _never_ make it!!!! </disgression type=sarcasm cause=friday style=overkill> -- david
