OK check it out, I have a few questions to ask. First of all I just moved back to deep South Texas after a few years of travelling. The Lower Rio Grande Valley to be exact, Brownsville/Harlingen/Mcallen area. Well this area of the US is at least 10 years behind the rest of the nation. Any type of scene here musical or otherwise is buried so far underground it might as well be invisible. There are only two radio stations that you can listen to with out immediately becoming nauseous. One is a Pop/Classic rock stations that have been playing the same songs since I was in Jr. High. The other is a Pop rnb station, whos Highlights include Britny Spears and the Backstreet Boys. The closest thing that the everyday public associates with techno/electronic music is the top 20 generic house crap they play on the pop rnb station on friday and saturday nights. Well I've been looking for some type of scene for awhile now, and the other day I was carousing around wallmart for no particular reason when I noticed what seemed to be a raver couple. You know the type, the guy dressed in some baggy imitation brand JNCO's, a snazzy new Addidas shirt, and a mexican lowrider hat covering his obviously bleached blond military style haircut. The girl wearing a matching pair of ass-tight hip hugging imitation brand JNCO's, a pretty little white teeshirt with short neon pink sleeves with a animie style kitty cat face printed on the front, and to top it off she was sporting a cute little half camouflage half 70's flower print vinyl backpack. Well I thought to my self, not really my type but they might be able to solve a few of my problems. So casually I strolled over to them and asked "Excuse me I don't me to bother you, but you don't know where I could get any info on Drum n Bass or Jungle parties?" Looking at me in that "and who are you" look she replied, "What?!?" all the while steadily flicking her tongue ring at me. And I replied back, "You know, Raves." This time both of them looking at me like I was completely out of my mind said, "no, no." Confused I said, "Oh well you just, I mean it looks like, Oh nevermind." and walked away. I saw them again later on and smiled and said hi, and the girl sticking her nose in the air replied "Your weird." So anyway at that instant I knew I wasn't going to get any information through the normal methods. So Here I am asking any texans, people who used to live in my area, or anyone who knows anything at all. 1. Does anyone know about any record shops of anykind preferably DnB or IDM, but at this point anything would do, in the Rio Grande Valley? 2. Does anyone know where to get info on the rave scene in the Valley? 3. Does anyone know any websites dealing with electronic music in the Valley? 4. Finally, If no to all of the Above does anyone know any good US Record stores on the internet specializing in DnB and IDM? http://www.psylux.com/VMM/ If you get any cool music where you are, it will be delivered to you by UPS or US Mail. I think you have a better chance of finding a rave in Alaska. If you want a real techno-music record shop, do the SEVEN hour drive to Austin, or the 22 hour drive to Mexico City. sorry , but if its fresh tunes you are after, you picked a real bitch of a place to live! ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-1156 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Fort Worth, Texas

Texas is not the best place for IDM, Austin is probably the best of all cities in Texas. Dallas has some stores that are IDM friendly (The X, Bone Daddy's in Denton, CD World in Addison and Mesquite, etc) - I know cause I'm going around consigning 12"s to em. :) Dallas (and Texas as a whole, unfortunately) appears to have a really indifferent attitude towards IDM or anything that is not ravey techno. There are those of us doing what we can to alleviate the issue, but it's taking time. I find it really annoying that I can talk on txraves about Proem (from Houston) and get stone cold silence. Bands that are even more straightforward dancy like Symbiosis and Liquid 22 (Houston) have a hard time getting booked at parties. And of course, all the rock clubs don't deal with that kind of music either. I wanna work up some sort of IDM party, but I've been short on money lately, and quite frankly, I expect it would be a money pit from past events I've dealt with.

SO true! While they are mostly Books & Video, Forbidden is the only place in North Tex you can walk in and find a Lexanculpt record !! I picked up that old Disko-B "Rancho Relaxo All-stars" CD, and am loving it! There is a good Experimental/Industrial section too, if you are in town you should stop by! Its by the state fair grounds, but worth the drive! I hope they get their inventory online soon so I can list them at the VMM !! (http://www.psylux.com/VMM ) Thanks Jason! ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-1156 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems Fort Worth, Texas
