I got Gary Numan "Telekon" in the mail today, along with an ErsatzAudio T-shirt. Now I'm going to get stoned and play video games. In a little while I might order a pizza. Wow, this *is* pretty glamorous! I feel like such the intellectual.. -Ted np: DJ Assault "Sex on the Beach" - Angstful 808 bass, urgent yet dejected synth stabs delivering a profound sense of ennui over vague & haunting vocals.. The line "playing in the sand" contains such subtle irony as to truly set a new standard in IDM. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dear Iggy, This is a good start, and with a little practice you can achive an even higher level of IDM'ness. First, you should trade in Telekon for a copy of Tin Drum by Japan, forget about the video games, if you want to be ultra IDM you need to have short central-european experimental art films that you downloaded from a pirate FTP server located somewhere in Finland, playing in the background on your G4 macintosh's monitor, you need to be laying on your bed reading Artbyte magazine or some fashionable japanese design mag(you cannot read the copy, but that does not matter because you only buy it to dig the graphic design) and you are going to go out for Thai food and drinks in a little while after you wind down from the day at your IT job. Personally, could never be that IDM(I live in Michigan) but if you really need a goal to strive for, this is a good guideline. Being ultra-IDM is very hard work, and it is not a task for the weak. If you think you have what it takes to be that hip I think you should go for it! Take care, Mike Taylor who wonders what people see in ghetto-bass... Ignatius J. Reilly wrote:

Trade in the Gary Numan? Oh, my goodness, no. Next you'll be telling me to get rid of the Talk Talk and Human League. Never! What's more, I'll even mix it shoddily with the previously mentioned DJ Assault.. I guess the point of ghetto bass is its total lack of pretense? That, and a sense of humor (now that isn't IDM at all, is it?) "Intelligent Dance Music"; what a funny attempt to categorize what could just as easily be called "A Broad Style/Styles of Electronic Music We Happen to Like". It's long-winded (And THAT is 100% IDM) but at the same time it's lacking that inherent feeling of superiority and self-satisfaction I get when I refer to my record collection as "intelligent". Try describing other tastes in this manner and see how silly it sounds: "What should we have for dinner?" "Oh, I don't know.. Something intelligent!" How droll.. -Ted __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! gary numan is fluff compared to human league and talk talk. the first two human league albums are electronic groundbreakers and talk talk...well, those last three talk talk records are simply the best pop has ever gotten. need i say those have more idm content than anything mike p ever did? * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# no particular place names/no particular song icq 5562209 i've been hiding/what am i hiding from? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
